Q: confused in new york,emphysema, copd and the h1n1 vaccine

i have emphysema, copd a trach and i am on 6 liters of oxygen and have other health issues. is taking the h1n1 vaccine dangerious for me to take? i was told taking the vaccine could be deadly for me because its a live virus. is this true and is there a specialist i should talk to.

Hi Glenn,

 

You should definitely talk to YOUR doctor who knows you. But it is true that the H1N1 virus is made from very weak, but live, virus. However, the risk of serious illness from taking the vaccine is very low. And it IS recommended for most people with chronic illnesses, but ONLY if they are younger than age 65. You don't say how old you are, so I can't say if you fall into the recommended group.

 

Talk with your doctor and follow his/her advice.
