Hi Bonnie,

It sounds as if you haven't yet actually been diagnosed with emphysema. Is that right? It's never a good idea to try to diagnose ourselves, as medical symptoms can often be attributed to different diseases. It will take a physical exam by your doctor and a medical history, as well as possible testing to narrow things down. The best place to start for all this is your regular personal physician, if you have one. That doctor can then refer you to a respiratory specialist for further follow up as needed.

I wanted to say good for you with your desire to quit smoking. There are many resources right here in the COPDConnection for quitting smoking. Here's a great place to start:

Your doctor may also have suggestions and tools that will prove useful.

Good luck!
