Hi KeKe: The first thing I would say is CONGRATULATIONS! You have taken a major step in regaining your life. I would also like to say that 12 step programs work in part because of the social interaction and support. Actually standing up in front of a group makes people a little more accountable for their promises to abstain.

I started doing some research regarding your question and found some sites that might be of some help. The first is the American Cancer Society link that I have put here for you. They have some great resources, including American Cancer Society's Quitline which is a telephone support system.

There is also Nicotine Anonymous, a non-profit 12-step program that may have meetings in your area.

All that being said, there actually are a few online programs; Smokers Anonymous that has chat rooms and online support, and Cyber Recovery Fellowship.

I cannot vouch for any of these except the ACS, having had no professional experience with any of the others.

The best of luck!

Yes, I would be able to say the same thing. I am finding the Chantix helps a lot. Although like the other comment, it doesn't help at all when drinking beer. My solution has been to not drink beer. Twice since I quit I have drank (Christmas celebrations) both times I smoked. My throat and lungs hurt enough the next day that I have not gone back to smoking full time. Not yet anyway, one day at a time(:

The next best thing to quitting smoking is to do away with the tobacco smoke particles and tar in your body, and prevent second-hand smoke at the same time.

This is possible with electonic cigarettes (e-cigs, e-cigarettes). There is no fire (saves on HO insurance), no smoke, no ash, no slow-decomposing cigarette butts, no 'sin' taxes. You do have to safely dispose of the rechargeable batteries, however.

A nicotine capsule containing a small amount of flavoring is used to create a vapor that simulates 'smoke' to the inhaler, but leaves no particles behind. So your psychological and physical addiction remains, but the most harmful effects of tobacco combustion are eliminated for you and those around you. Since there are a variety of nicotine strengths and flavorings, you may be more able to focus on your adictions in order to make a behavior change.

I have a summary of the legal battles being waged over these devices on my website, www.stepbackamoment.com/Health on the "Air" page. If you have COPD and have smokers around you, then they need to be advised of these devices, because the big tobacco interests are setting their sights as you read this.

Hi Keke -

Yes, there is.  Nicotine Anonymous is a 12-step Fellowship, patterned after Alcoholics Anonymous, for people who want to live life free of nicotine in all forms.  We have face-to-face meetings in many areas of the United States, as well as several countries around the world.  We also have many on-line meetings a week, as well as telephone bridge meetings.  Much more can be found about Nicotine Anonymous at www.nicotine-anonymous.org

Best wishes to you in your goal of living life free of nicotine, one day at a time.

Ed T., gratefully recovering from addiction to nicotine
