Sunday, September 27, 2009 Elika asks

Q: I quit smoking 7 days ago. I need someone to talk to about cravings between tasks.

I quit smoking 7 days ago. I had some slips but I remain committed. I am having the most difficulty with urges/cravings between tasks. I am retired, age 63 and have smoked since I was 15 years old. I am using Nicorette gum on and off during the day. I tried the patch, but actually felt worse and stopped. I bought some hard candy but it's not enough. I feel I had to do this, quitting, because I am ashamed to be a smoker. Please help, I can't find an answer. Thanks for your time.

Well done Elika, you are almost there and almost past the worst stage. What you must now do is when you get another craving is to start taking breaths of air, deep into your lungs. Then blow it out and then repeat this procedure for about 3-4 minutes. You might think this is rediculous and you have probably heard it all before but, breathing is a tool which you must use to feel the full effects.

So although it appears daft use you lungs whenever you get a craving and if you do keep it up for at least one week the cravings will have almost disappeard.

You'll make it
