Q: What are the side effects of stopping Claritin_D after long-term use?

My son has been taking Claritin_D for over a year. He has back and joint pain and has been advised to stop taking it. Last night is the first night he did not take it and he is experiencing the following: his skin feels "weird", his eyes hurt, congestion, irritated throat. Are these symptoms common when you try to go off of this drug?

The symptoms you are describing don't sound like withdrawal symptoms; they sound like allergy symptoms, which is to be expected if your son has been taking Claritin-D, as that is an allergy medicine.

But if you have concerns, your best bet is to consult with a doctor who knows your son and can examine him in person.

Best,

Kathi
