Although COPD generally strikes more often in adults over the age of 40, it is possible to get it at a younger age. Much will depend on your medical history. If you're not satisfied with the diagnosis, you might want to consider getting a second opinion, just to be sure that COPD is really the cause of your symptoms.
In the past, asthma was sometimes referred to as COPD, but experts know now that they are two separate conditions, with slightly different pathology, symptoms and prognosis. You can read more about the differences and similarities here:

At this young age, I would suggest asking your Dr. to test you for Alpha-1, which is an inherated form of COPD. Simple blood test will tell and you could have this even if your parents do not. Very important to know!
