Friday, July 01, 2011 Pat asks

Q: I have COPD emphysema and chronic bronchitis . I read here all the time and have posted once. I just am wondering if you can see where a stimulant would help a person that has this disease?

I have other things going on and will start receiving Medicare the first of July., yeaaaaa I will now be able to go to a Dr, and see what is really going on. What is related to the COPD and what could be a different illness altogether. It is a long story but my Dr is in his 80's and I have been seeing him for over 10 years and although I have a great deal of faith in him, In this instance, he doesn't seem to be interested in anything that I say and always wants to blame everything on the COPD. I know that I am no MD but I know my body and I know if something is wrong, thanks

Hi Pat... It's great to be loyal to your doctor, but don't make it "blind" loyalty. Although I am no ageist, believing age is often a state of mind more than anything, still your doctor could be not up on the latest treatments. It's hard for me to say, but it does sound as though he minimizes your opinions.

However, I CAN tell you that you always have the right to a second opinion. If your doctor is so certain everything is related to your COPD, then ask for a referral to a pulmonary specialist who can evaluate you in greater depth and with greater expertise than a generalist.

Or... just change doctors, if you feel strongly enough about these issues. It's your body, your health and your life at stake. So advocate for yourself!

Take care,

Kathi
