The singer and actor Jerry Reed, best known for his role as "The Snowman" in the three Smokey and the Bandit movies, has died of complications from emphysema at the age of 71. Reed, whose mother bought him a $2 guitar when he was eight, went on to write songs that were performed by music greats such as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, and Chet Atkins. Reed had been diagnosed with emphysema and was under hospice care in Nashville, Tennessee.
