FDA orders black box warning for smoking drugs Chantix, Zyban

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is requiring a black box warning added to the label of the anti-smoking drugs Chantix and Zyban, cautioning patients about the possibility of psychiatric side effects. The agency is requiring the warning based on scientific studies and a review of clinical trails that suggest the stop-smoking medications can cause changes in behavior, depression, suicidal thoughts, and other signs of serious mental illness. Experts say there have been 98 suicides and 188 suicide attempts involving Chantix, and 14 suicides and 17 attempts reported with Zyban.
