U.S. Military mulls smoking ban

(United Press International) UPDATED 2009-07-12

A proposed smoking ban for the U.S. military is being mulled over by officials. The ban would prevent the sale of tobacco on bases, and would prohibit smoking by any soldier in uniform--even during combat. Experts who support the ban say smoking causes health problems that affect soldiers' readiness for combat, while critics of the ban suggest that it's too much to expect soldiers who are far from home and under enormous stress to give up tobacco.
