Federal health regulators say e-cigarettes may contain as many cancer-causing toxins and nicotine as regular cigarettes. Officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been warning consumers for some time about potential safety hazards from the devices--since e-cigarettes have not been submitted to the FDA for regulation and approval. Independent studies carried out by the FDA found that one brand of e-cigarette contained an ingredient used in antifreeze, and the other brand studied contained known carcinogens.
