'Safe' ozone levels may not be

The level of ozone in the air deemed "safe" by current standards may have a negative effect on lung function in healthy people, a new study suggests. The current standard allows for ozone up to 75 parts per billion over an eight-hour time period, but the new study found that people exposed to 70 parts per billion over the course of six hours significantly decreased lung function in the study's 31 healthy non-smokers. Researchers say that if healthy individuals are affected at these "safe" levels, it may explain why asthmatics and patients with COPD have increased risk of hospitalization on days when the ozone level is high.  Read full story >
