Statins may benefit COPD patients

Patients who have COPD may benefit from taking statin drugs, a new review of published research suggests. Scientists looked at nine studies conducted between 2006 and 2008, and they found that statins reduced the risk of death from COPD, and from all other causes. Patients who took a statin were also less likely to visit an urgent care center because of breathing problems, and had fewer COPD exacerbations. Researchers say the secret could be that the heart drugs reduce airway inflammation.
