New pneumonia vaccine may work better for COPD patients

A new pneumonia vaccine may be better at preventing infections in COPD patients than the version most commonly used, experts say. Normally, doctors recommend that all COPD patients be vaccinated with the PPSV23 vaccine, but researchers say it has not been shown to be effective in those with lung disease. In a study of 120 patient, those who received the newer PCV7 were better able to fight off pneumonia-causing bacteria than those who were given the standard treatment.
