Green tea may upset cancer cells
Green tea is known for its many health benefits and now helping to prevent cancer may be added to the list. A new study published in Metabolomics found an element in green tea can hinder the metabolism of pancreatic cancer cells, thereby limiting the growth and risk of the cancer.
This reaction occurs when epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) subdues lactate dehydrogenase A (LDH), an important enzyme in cancer metabolism. While it was previously reported that green tea may have cancer fighting benefits, it wasn’t exactly clear why until this study from the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute.
The researchers figured out this reaction by implementing state-of-the-art metabolic profiling techniques and analyzing the frequency of disrupted molecules in the metabolic pathways of the pancreatic cancer cells.
Scientists are hoping this new information can help fight cancer by targeting the metabolic system in cancer cells, as well as contribute to cancer research and prevention.
