I went through Hurricane Ike a couple of years ago in Houston. It can be quite scary and stressful. The real stress and boredom can start after the storm is over. No electricity or running water for several days or even weeks. Lots of traffic on streets because stop lights are not working properly. Loss of work for some people. Destruction of your personal property and having to deal with insurance companies can get very depressing. I wish everyone in the path the best of luck. Leave if at all possible! Secure your home and belongings the best you can.
Hello merely me,
On Aug.28,2011 Irene dumped 12+" in the Catskill Mtns. I am on higher ground so was fortunate, but of the three towns in my community all were devistated by flooding, taking homes, businesses and one life. Most areas have been closed off a whole block of businesses in one small town is endanger of collapse and or may be torn down as it is leaning back and parts of side walk are cracked and buckeling. The only main grocery store and the pharmacy attached collapsed. My brothers home among many others were destroyed from the flooding, he thought he lost one of his cats as my bf and other family tried to get to the cat. Days later he did find his cat alive and scared, he has since relocated thanks to Fema but still in a flood plane. I felt helpless and wanted to help some how, my only communications were thru Face Book. As one day blended with the next for weeks National Guard came to help as Volunteer fire fighters were trying to control traffic and were threatened violence by some who wanted to get back to NYC...Our local vol. fire house was flooded w/ 5' of water and were evacuating and rescuing people, those fire trucks are now a total loss. I created a petition for river dredging and cleaning as well as wrote a letter to the leary fire fighters organization for help in replacing these important vehicles. Recently a fire broke out on the very street my brother now lives on only to find out it was arson by the owner who apparently was denied help from Fema and didn't have flood ins. This has brought out the best and the worst in people.

I live in MD (fortunately not the eastern short) so am expecting to get some of the storm since it's tracking a little more to the west. I'm preparing by stocking up on some non-perishables in case we're without power for a few days. Also making sure we've got plenty of candles (batteries are already hard to come by), propane for the grill, gas in the car. Also making sure an outside drain is clear and the gutters are clean. Otherwise, we'll just sit back and watch the weather this weekend. I've been through a few tropical storms but not a full hurricane. Not feeling anxious about it - I'll be happy if no trees come down on top of us!
These are excellent ideas to prepare for this storm.
I loathe storms like this. I especially hate wind. I always imagine I will be like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz...and have my house sent swirling.
We will see what happens. Maybe it will be less damaging than they are predicting. Flooding will be an issue for some regions.
I will be checking as I am able on the weekend to see how people are doing.
Stay safe!
