Ways to Keep Your Depression Treatment Affordable

By Deborah Gray, Health Guide Wednesday, August 18, 2010
It's ironic. When you've lost your job or are struggling financially, as many people are these days, you need depression treatment more than ever. But depression treatment isn't cheap, even if you have insurance. If you're worrying about how to pay the rent or mortgage, buy food and pay the electric ...

Okay love the one phrase..."birds gotta fly...insurance companies gotta deny claims."  I am laughing although it isn't funny...in that it is so true.

I think your advice is really good in that many people do not realize that you can negotiate the therapy fees.  Many therapists have a sliding scale.

I am going to try to revise an earlier post I wrote about getting mental health help when you are uninsured or don't have much money.  I want to add these links to your articles.  The more information we have to give to people the better.

Thank you so much for writing this...it is practical information that our members can use.

A lot of times a doctor will have samples they can give you, or you can apply to a pharmaceutical company for reduced or free meds.

I have been through the "unemployment" "uninsured" runaround for almost 2 years now and I think I have done it all. What I mean by that is I've found out how to get around a lot of the high costs of treatment.

First thing I did was go to the local health department. They have doctors ( although not psychiatrists ) that can help you with maintenance of your current medications. They are not likely to change anything if you bring in what you had/have been taking, but ARE highly likely to lower the dose if you are on any controlled substance. ( several reasons for this... ) I met with a REAL person in the pharmacy at the Health Department and they got me signed up to receive FREE medicines through a plan that some of the Pharma companies offer. I get three different medicines at no cost. Lamictal, Seroquel and Abilify. ( I don't take any of the latter at this moment ) So, start there. Also, go straight to the website of the company that makes your medicine and search around for a patient assistant program. Also, Rx Total Access is something you can get online and they supply you with a card that gives large discounts on straight to pharmacy prescriptions.

Second, if you feel bad, are not getting the proper medicines, try your local comprehensive care center. They have therapist's that will work with your doctor at the health department, confirming the fact that you do indeed need these medicines. Old records from your last Psychiatrist helps a lot in getting the right medicines. They won't take your word for it and you'll need to take in your bottles of old medicines. The Health Department and Comp Care are not the highest end places, and be warned that there are long waits and other things that perhaps might cause a BP person or Depressed person some stressors.

You will need to show some form of "indigence" or lack of income. I was able to get letters from my mother and ex that they were paying my bills and I had no job or money.

It is really a matter of jumping through hoops but it might help people who just need to stay on their medicines and have no place for health care.

I finally bit the bullet and borrowed money to see a REAL psychiatrist and it made a huge difference. First visit was $350 for a one hour analysis... 2nd visit was $125 and last for medicine check was $65. One thing is that he gives me free samples for a month or two of medicine, so it more than pays for the office visits. He has really helped me with my Bipolar issues and I'm on the right "witches brew" of chemicals in my brain. Still unemployed, but better able to get up each day and go out there with a good attitude and find that job!!

Good luck!!

Go to your local Community Service Board. Every city has one. For the mentally ill, that is low income. You can find a P Dr, medication, physiologist etc there. Way's of getting help with your rent also, you'll get a case manager to help you with all your questions.

I take an antidepressant for chronic headache and pain control. WalMart offers it for $4/per 25mg, no insurance needed. I suggest checking out allt he $4 precriptions WalMart offers. These are not "lesser" drugs even though just $4 -- its a trade off, WalMart figures they will make up the difference becasue you will probably make other purchases while in their store. :)

Good suggestion. It's really important to shop around and check places you might not immediately think of, like Wal-Mart. When we moved out to CA, we called around to different pharmacies for one of my prescriptions, and the variety in cost was amazing.
