Serotonin Syndrome

Have you ever heard of Serotonin Syndrome? Probably not. Neither had I, until recently. But if you, or someone you know, take certain types of antidepressants, you need to know more about it.Serotonin Syndrome is a toxic and potentially fatal toxic drug reaction that can occur when two or more sero...

This information is amazing.I've been on Fluoxetine for the past 10 years & am taking Neodipar for my diabetese & Advant for my borderline blood pressure.I also take 5 mg of valium a day. Thanks to this information I'm going to look further into my IBS.I've developed Irritable Bowel Syndrome which needs looking into as it may well be a toxic reaction to the cocktail of drugs I'm compelled to take.I wish I could give up Fluoxetine.I take 2 capsules of 20 mg. a week.I'm hanging onto it as I fear a relapse.

I suffer from IBS as well. It is such a complicated disease and it's hard to know half the time what's causing the pain. I think it's worth investigating any medicine you're taking to see if it is behind your IBS.

You have some good information here. There is one thing I think you should research and that is the possibility of one medication (mono therapy) causing Serotonin Syndrome. I know about this because my case of Serotonin Syndrome was caused by one drug - Tramadol. After I was poisoned other substances exasperated my condition. The list of things that you need to avoid is quite long. You should research anything you put in your body if you are recovering from Serotonin Syndrome. Sleep Aides are among some of the more dangerous ones. They usually have things in them that aggravate it like Tryptophan and melatonin. And then there is the issue of food. We discovered this by accident and experimentation - but foods high in Tryptophan can really spike your Serotonin levels. There are websites that tell you what is high in tryptophan. The only meats that are safe are ground beef (with out soy) and bacon. Avoid all shell fish and all seafood and only try small amounts when you are healed. Fresh tomatoes are real bad too. Puree is fine. You have to do your research and try things in small amounts. If you are in a honting culture you are going to have to be extremely careful. All game animals have the highest levels of tryptophan. Remember: No Fish, No Fowl, No Venison or any wild animal. No whole grain foods. White rice is the best grain. Don't make any assumptions. My case lasted for a long time and a year later I still have a medicinal smell in my nose which was very intense at the beginning. They say it only lasts a few days or weeks but that is not entirely true. You can be in the hypo-manic stage for years (like I was) and not know it. I believe that this may be the reason why my detox has taken so long.

How did you get diagnosed with this? I am thinking about going to the ER. I went last week and they set me up with a neurologist. She has no clue what is wrong with me. I have been taking Tramadol (recreationally) off and on for a while and the day before my symptoms started I had upped my dose. When I was at the ER last week I found out I was pregnant so I stopped cold turkey and my symptoms started going away. My neurologist called the other day and said I had to wean myself off and not to quit coldturkey because the side effects can cause withdraw. So I started taking 100 mg then am to cut down to 50 mg next week. Everythings is so bad since I started the tramadol again and now my back where my kidneys are is killing me. I always thought Tramadol was the miracle drug for my pain, depression, and narcolepsy, but now I think it is poisioning me.
