I also have the symptoms of a depressed teen, and my parents just think I'm being lazy or something, and I always get yelled at for it. I have also told them that I have depression, but I'm beginning to think that they don't believe me. I've had bad grades, and they thought that something else was wrong. Which leads me to ask what to do when parents know, but don't believe, and don't have the money to get to a doctor to prove it?
I can't agree more with your post. Depression is a serious illness and unfortunately goes untreated way too often. It's not something that you can just "snap out of". There are various types of treatments for <a href+"http://www.silverhillhospital.org/adolescent-programs.htm"> adolescent depression</a>.
Thank you for your article on depression and teenagers. It was great to read it and have my feelings and thoughts validated about my own teenage son--whom I for MONTHS have been trying to get into counseling to no avail. His father had convinced him it wasn't need and would be a waste of time. Finally my 15 year old came to me and said he would try going one time-today is the day. I KNOW he is depressed, as it not only run in my family, but he has been showing classic symptoms. Withdrawing from normal activities that he usually loves to do, sleeping more, becoming more defiant, swearing, lying, and not to mention his grades have gone from A's & B's--to D's & F's in just one qtr of school. I plan on sending this article to his father so that he can see that there are actually people in this world that think like I do, and that I am not just 'creating' a problem for our son. Thank you so much.
What if the parents never realize that there's even something wrong?
I have all the symptoms that you mentioned in a depressed teen, but no one notice a thing, even in school everybody think that's how I always act, I tried to at least give my parents a hint but they always seem too busy to understand, even when they noticed some marks on the back of my hand, but they assume it was 'cause of allergy, they never get the chance to see it closely.
I can't tell them, not directly, maybe they'll notice my grades
I hope your parents believe you. Mine haven't.
I only told my parents about SYMPTOMS of depression, but my mom figured it out. and since january of this year I'm being treated for depression.
Maybe you can tell a professional person, like a social councilor or a therapist in your school/college, and they might be ablre to help you and explain to your parent what's going on with your parents ^^
I don't really like professional people to talk to. They actually scare me if I talk to them in person.
hehe You have to, if you wanna get better, don't you have a relative that you're close to, they might help, an aunt/uncle/cousin?
Well, if any of my family were in the same state, I might've been able to talk to my aunt Bobbie, but I'm not entirely sure she would fully understand. If I ever get the chance to talk to her at all, I can give it a try.
