Coping with Social Anxiety and Depression During the Holidays

By Deborah Gray, Health Guide Friday, November 20, 2009
We spent Halloween at my sister's house this year. Every year, most of the houses on the block she lives on decorate their garages as one of the locations in the Harry Potter books. Hi I am a total party phobic, a chatty friendly person, i just clam up, maybe its performance anxiety or the small talk one has to make, Im just hopeless at 'working a room' and since I quit alcohol [due to being on antidepressants] it makes it even more painful. So I just dont go.. When I used to go to parties, Id invariably get tipsy with tension and topping up the wine and I would end up being amorous and the extrovert but without the alcohol, I just havent been at a party for years !! I love a group of people chatting together, but a party.. Id rather have 2 root canals and an extraction !!!

I know what you mean. I think it's kind of performance anxiety, and I know what you mean about alcohol helping. But I don't really drink anymore, and besides, it's possible to end up saying something stupid if you're a little tipsy.

The best thing that I've come up with is helping the host, if it's that type of situation. You can also try wearing something that's a conversation opener, like a piece of jewelry.

Yes, Thats an idea, Something to wear thats a conversation starter.  I cant explaint it, its the having to 'small talk ' and move around. I find it painful and artificial. I suppose if I de-sensitized myself by say, doing a whole load of parties together I could desensitize myself. !! Without alcohol though, even a few glasses to oil the wheels of Socialising, its hard !
