Depression Getting Worse? Your All or Nothing Thinking Isn't Helping
1/23/12 3:09am

Hi Amanda,

It does sound like you need to talk to someone. In Australia there are places like the mental health team that you can call and visit for free - have you looked for places like that where you are? There are also sites like 'Reachout' and 'Beyond Blue' here in Australia where you can get more information like that. If you are in America I believe Merely Me has posted up ways to get help for little or no money...

Sleep is always a difficult one and different things work for different people. Making sure that you don't eat for a couple of hours before you go to bed, having a regular routine, and trying to keep away from anything like TV and computers have been suggested as ways to help with sleep.

Not wanting to go out and socialise is also something that is common and yet difficult to deal with. Merely Me has been posting about this recently - about trying to push ourselves into socialising even when we don't feel like it, even if in small ways (like coming here online and reaching out) can help.

I hope you manage to find some help and continue to share here with us. Welcome.

Hello Amanda

May we ask if you live in the states or another country?

If you live in the states there are other ways to get help when you lack insurance.  Do you receive medicaid or medicare...for example?

Do you have any supports?  Any family or friends who might be able to help you?

I am not a therapist but what you are describing sure does sound like depression.  But you will need a doctor to properly diagnose and treat you.

Have you had any major crises recently?  Any losses?  Any traumatic events which may be making your mood worse?

I am going to give you one link to start with and if you need more resources you just let us know.

This is the link to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.  They have an information hotline I think you should call.

The Information HelpLine is an information and referral service which can be reached by calling 1 (800) 950-NAMI (6264), Monday through Friday, 10 am- 6 pm, Eastern time.

They may be able to provide some help to you in finding a mental health clinic, therapist, or at least a peer support group.

In the meantime please do share more with us about your depression.  We are here to listen!
