Hi Kate!
I got a new perspective! I decided to think about what is wonderful about the hearts!
I decided that it is good that it encourages people to give to others by giving information that might help, answering questions, I don't know...compassion of course, encouragement....to those who feel they do not have this to give to others!
It encourages people to do it anyway and I think this definately helps people feel worthwhile and helps depression!
So while numbers still bother me, maybe there is something else, this idea can sit with me with a little more peace for the moment...still bothered by numbers, have to say though.. but trying to find the gem in it which there usually is!
cheers and thanks for being here

Hey Marishka!
Thanks for the feedback. To answer your question, HealthCentral makes money through advertising on the sites. The new hearts feature has absolutely nothing to do with that. HealthCentral doesn't make any money from it. It is solely intended to be an alternative way for our members to offer praise and support for each other. It's also a low-effort way for new and unregistered users to get involved and participate in the community. And, yes, we introduced it across all HealthCentral communities at once.
You asked another really good question that I ask myself too -- why don't more people comment on our community posts? I think part of it has to do with the fact that while many people get a lot out of reading other member's posts and questions, not everyone is ready to participate and share stories themselves. We hoped that introducing the hearts feature would allow those people a way to slowly get more involved in the community in the way that they're comfortable with. Regardless, we know that every member is different and has different reasons for coming to the site. We just hope to be able to meet those needs and provide the safe, nurturing, supportive community experience that our members deserve.
When it comes to the site, including the hearts feature, please keep the feedback coming. There have got to be ways that we can tweak the system to make it better. Maybe taking the numbers off the hearts is the way to go. You guys tell us what you want and I'll do my best to see that it happens.
Thanks again for your help, Marishka, and have a great day!
Hi Kate!
You read all the posts and comments?! That is a lot of reading!
Well then you have my opinion on the hearts. If HC is a for profit business, do you mind explaining how money is made for health central? Does the clicking on hearts or what? have to do with it?
I know there are a lot of sites, do they all have hearts now? hmm....I guess I could read on other sites people's opinions of them, but I am tired right now...
Does health central hire people to be 'experts' on health central and pay them?
I agree, MM is great! She is compassionate, an excellent writer and empathic.
I think I saw you in some video of health central , forgot where, where they walked through the office and said hello to everyone!
How many 'members' are there on mydepressionconnection.com? How come more people don't post in your opinion? It is usually the same few over and over...well you probably don't know either...
hope you have a good weekend and I am going to give you a heart :)
cheers,
Marishka
