You're probably going to think I'm nuts saying this, but after having a brief episode while depressed of thinking I was hearing my name being called, my doctor put me on Seroquel but I really couldn't function on it and almost lost my job. I've since wondered if some of these experiences might be more "psychic" rather than psychotic, or some sort of spiritual experience. I really didn't think I was crazy and I do believe in spirits and ghosts, so who knows? It hasn't come back but I know the Seroquel did nothing but dope me up - I'd rather hear voices!

Well it's true that our system of medicine seems to function in terms of illness category and standard treatments. It seems to me that any imbalance in the brain is likely to result in a whole number of perceptual anomalies that may simply self-correct if left alone. It's not easy coping with unusual brain activity and it's a difficult call whether standard interventions will help or not. Clearly, in your case, the cost-benefit ratio of medication wasn't in your favor. Often with so-called psychotic experiences it comes down to what you can live with. If the situation becomes so disturbing that it's hard to cope, then antipsychotic medication is really all we have to try and take the edge off.
