This one's for you....Merely Me!
It is January, I can remember going down to the country and it being so cold. I did not think that it was suppose to get that cold in the country. Those are the thoughts that I had when I was a lot younger, and going down south, way down South. At least I thought that Georgia was anther world. We were young, and did not know that people lived so simple. No cable, no baseboard heat, and monster bugs, who they apparently fed, because our city bugs did not get that big! We would visit our grandparents as often as possible, because they were old, and did not do a lot of traveling; old people back then just didn't. But it was nothing for my pops to load us in the "Blue Goose" and hit the highway and be heading down to Georgia. I knew once we got down there it was on! Grandma, would cook homemade biscuits, we would have real butter on them, and preserves. Pear preserves, because she had a pear tree right out by the back porch that was at least 8 stories high. Now to tell you the truth, I did not like pear preserves, ugh! But grape jelly was a foreign thing to them; it came from the local grocery store, Piggly Wiggly! If you were not careful sometimes, when the tree got top heavy with the pears, one would fall and hit you on the head. I know this because I have seen it happen to my grandpa & brother. My brother deserved it he tormented everyone. Now grandma would get up early and the smell of real bacon cooking, and the homemade biscuits would wake you up. The only part I did not like was having to walk down that cold dark hall to get to the kitchen. I had no choice, as my pops would say and then laugh, "Get the ghost to carry you". He knew that all of us kids had it in our minds, that the country was full of ghost! Not so, it was that our Uncles had told us so many ghost stories, we were paranoid and they played on that. Now I love to take pictures, and when I think back about all of the beautiful sunrises, I shutter to think about what a beautiful portfolio I would have. Well it is time to get up grandma is cooking the bacon, and she is even frying some chicken. The grits are done, real grits, not the ones I fix, "just add hot water". I also smell those biscuits, and sausage. A heart attack, because to all that grease, fatty foods, no way good eating that is what that was. I will have a heart attack when I am 90, but right now, I am going to eat! I just heard the back door open; grandpa is coming in from the fields. He has fed the hogs, gathered the eggs. I say to him, "Grandpa, why didn't you wake me, and let me go"? His reply was, "I'll get you in the morning, and it should be warmer". Then he patted me on the head and said, "Put grandpa's hat on the table, thanks little one.

Awww thanks Sherry for giving us another story!
I dream of this sort of breakfast with the eggs, sausage, grits, and homemade biscuits. That sounds fabulous! It must have taken your grandmother a long time to make all this wonderful stuff.
I do love hearing about your memories....growing up in the inner city...I have no such memories as this.
Thank you again Sherry.
Hi Merely,
Boy are we up early. I have gotten up early all my life, it is a habit I just cannot seem to break! I now have three (3) dogs running around my house, they are on a schedule. Up at 6:30 outside to relieve themselves, inside to eat, then they sleep outisde again for about 2 hours, inside sleep again, eat at 3, then outisde again, eat at 5:00 outside again, outisde again at 7:30, then at about 8, everyone is put in their kennel for a good nights sleep!
I have no life, I craft in between, caring for the dogs. Hopefull 2 will be gone with their mother (my oldest) today. WHEW! I need a break!
