Growing up Country, The Rat

By Smomdukes Tuesday, January 26, 2010

When living in the country, all of the animals and bugs are so much bigger, at least that is the way it seemed to me.  I do not know why, but they seem to grow larger.  Maybe it is the fresh air and the sunshine and all, but the mosquitos are larger and they bite harder, because the bumps are bigger.  The knats are bigger, and can fly faster, and they hang together in swarms, huge swarms.  Now the rodents grow a lot larger also.  Now one summer while visiting my grandparents, one of my cousins left the back screen door open just a tad.  Now when you lived in the country, at least one porch had to be screened in, this was your sitting and visiting porch, which was the front porch, and the flowers were prettier to look at, even the poppies.  Which are so very illegal, but it was cool back then, and they sure were pretty, those red blooms.  Well at grandma's house the back porch was not screened in.  Well anyway, when he did not close the screen door completely, the knats, flies, and worst of all a field rat came in.  I was sitting at the table, and saw it scurry to a nearby hole in the wall.  I screamed, and so did my grandma.  Oh boy that was most unsettling a rat in the house.  Now some called them mice, field mice, rat, and wharf rat.  It did not matter it did not belong in the house.  My grandma, starting yelling for my grandpa, "Virgil, Virgil there is a rat in my kitchen"!  Grandpa being the calm person that he was, said, "Don't worry Melanie, I'll get it".  Well grandpa apparently saw the fear in my eyes, he said, baby don't worry, I'll catch it, with that I was all right.  Night soon fell on the old country house, and my mind wandered back to the rat.  My sisters and brothers, we got together and said....we are going to take our baths early, we are not going to drink a lot of water or punch, because once we got into the bed, we were not getting up until it was good and daylight.  Grandpa unbeknown to us had set out traps.  On those traps he had put that delicous hoop cheese, lucky rat!  The bedroom that the kids slept in was next to grandma and grandpa's room.  This particular night he left their door open.  Sometime in the night, I heard a large clap.  It was the rat trap catching the rat.  I heard grandpa say, "Melanie I got him".  I figured he meant the rat, so I went on to sleep finally.  Grandpa was up extra early the next morning, and so was grandma.  Grandpa got rid of the rat, and grandma was cleaning her kitchen with bleach.  The reason I know it was bleach the smell woke me up.  Grandma firmly believed in keeping a clean kitchen, she said people have to put this food in their mouths, so she had to make sure it was clean, and she did.  When grandpa came back in he said, "little one, I told you I would take care of it", and he did.   Now I could sleep better at night, and I could walk down that long hall at night without the fear of meeting the "Rat".  It's all a part of Growing up country!

Now that I am older, yes and no about living in the country.  It was so quite at night you could her the crickets hoping on the sandWink  When I was younger, I longed for the sounds of the city.  You see there was no street lights just pitch black, and being a kid that can be kinda scary.  I have not been back to the country of Georgia since my last grandparent died.  My Father's farm is still there sorta, my Mother's farm and land has been sold, and from what I understand is now a community.  So all that I have are the memories, good and funny memories which I cherish.  It gets extremely hot in Georgia during the summer, and as a person with MS, I have to watch the heat.  But I will continue to tell about the memories of the country and all of the funny things we went through as children.  I tell my girls that they have not lived.  Thank you for enjoying the stories.

Hi Sherry/smomdukes,

That is interesting, you feel yes and no about going back to living the country.  I understand the heat thing and health issues.  It is also interesting you said to your girls they have not lived yet about living in the country. It is very interesting to hear about the country, thank you    How do you mean about not lived yet when you say it to your girls?

My two daugthers are 26 & 28 they are spoiled ROTTEN!!!!!!!!!!!  They have been to the country when my parents would go and visit their parents when they were alive.  They hated it!  My girls spent a lot of time with my parents, and they got spoiled rotten.  My husband and I use to go camping, they did not want to go.  They did not want to sleep in a tent.  They said they would go if they could stay in  Holiday Inn!  Kids today do not know what they are missing, those days in Georgia on the farm, in the hot blazing sun, Oh if I could turn back the hands of time.  When I tell them about the days in the country, they are amazed.  They just don't realize how great it was.  But hey I tell them it is their lossWink

Hi Sherry/smomdukes,

Oh, OK.  Yeah, I get it.  They can't understand how wonderful it is being on a farm and in the dirt because they are used to modern day appliances and such.  I can see that.  Well I would love to live on a farm if I could really.  I know how wonderful it is, even though I didn't grow up in the country...I have pictures around my city apartment of barns, cute pig, a goat....I long for the quiet, simplicity, slowness...

thanks again for all your sharing about the country, it is great

Oh I hate rats and bugs and especially waterbugs.  It is something...I think of hamsters as cute but rats....oh no.  Maybe it is the long tail?  I worked in a bakery as a teen and the only bathroom was way in the back where the bakers worked and it was more like a wooden shack back there.  and there would be rats...us girls would scream and the bakers would laugh and laugh.

I am so glad to see you writing here again...hadn't seen you for so long.  You bring much cheer and happiness here.  Thank you Sherry!
