Vicki, after I read your post, I could not resist; enjoy!
You know living in the city; you are just a certain way. You don't just stroll in the grass with your sneakers. Because the grass will stain them, and plus usually it is wet. It is not cool to walk around with wet sneakers on. Talk about sneakers, let me tell you something. There were four of us kids. My pops was not impressed one bit by name brands. He never was, but we were! We lived in the city, in the summer we were going to the country, we had to impress; right, duh! My pops made a huge mistake one year, or we did, us kids told him that we wanted some of those colorful Converse tennis shoes like the cool kids. Oh my goodness, big mistake. My pops being who he is, took us girls to Grants, I know you guys remember the store that use to be called Grants. They had those colorful, look a like converse tennis shoes. They cost less than half the price of the real Converse Tennis shoe. My pops saw the price. These were his words, "You can get you a pair in every color, and I bet your cousins in Georgia won't have those." I wanted to scream, because in my mind I was thinking they sure won't pops, because those cheap shoes will not last that long. He did not flinch. He was dead serious! You have to know my pops. My brothers fell out laughing; they were getting the good shoes because they were boys! My brother the oldest one, slyly said, hey if you are lucky, when we are chasing the cows, you will leave the soles of your shoes in the field with the cows, and he laughed even harder. My sister and I did not think that it was funny, not even a little bit because it was true, with those cheap look a like converse tennis shoes, the soles would probably come off in the cow pasture! But what we did not understand, my dad had to stretch his money. So cheap shoes for the girls was our fate! So I had to resort to the only thing that I knew would work. I did not want to, but I also knew that I wanted the good tennis shoes. So here goes; "Pops, you know grandpa is going to have us out there herding those cows, he is going to use us instead of the dogs, so we are going to need good tennis shoes." He knew that I was right. With that in mind; we got real Converse tennis shoes, and fake ones also. Those we used for herding the cows. It was a sight to see, the dogs rode in the back of the truck looking at us while we ran in the fields yelling at the cows, herding them in; basically doing what those lazy dogs should have been doing. When we came in the summer, it was vacation time for the DOGS, imagine that! Now I can imagine in the minds of those dogs they were thinking, thank God for the summer, we get to rest and watch those stupid city grand kids run after those dumb cows. Now this was at my pops dad's farm. He had the cows. Boy, I look back now, I hated chasing those cows, and boy did they stink. Maybe that is why today I do not like milk. Could that be why I have MS, and also why I am lactose intolerant? You know the country gave me a lot of hang ups. Well when we finished chasing the cows, after we took sticks and cleaned cow dung off our new converse look-a-like tennis shoes, we hopped in the back of grandpa's pick-up truck and headed back to the house. The fighting began. Who would take a bath first? We all stunk the same, we were all mad, except the dogs, but that was a part of growing up country. It made us who we are today. Human cow herders, ha, ha! Life ain't so bad, it could have been worse, right? It was all a part of growing up country.

I love this story Sherry!
I always got my shoes at the cheap stores...I kinda still do...like the Payless store. I live in sneakers. I was wearing nice shoes at the conference and I was praying the whole time they would not fall off my feet. I am not used to walking around in anything but tennis shoes! Us women have it hard with all these different shoes we are expected to wear!
And handbags...wow...we have to carry our lives in our handbag. How do men get away with just carrying a wallet?
Anyways...great story...keep 'em coming. So glad you are a part of our community here. We need you!
