Feeling Alone in My Depression

    helpme  asked...

Is there someone who can please help me? I am a mom and a wife. I work. But I am so depressed. I have very little energy. All I want to do is lie in bed and sleep or watch TV. And eat. I have a problem with food also. I have gained a lot of weight because of my inactivity. I have very little drive or ambition. I can barely take care of myself or my family. My house is a mess and in shambles because I have no energy to take care of it.

My husband doesn't get it, so I can't talk to him. I have no one else to talk to whom I feel comfortable with. I know I should see a therapist but I do not have the energy. I used to be so happy and active. I don't know what to do.

    Dear helpme,

You obviously recognize that you need help. What needs to happen is that you actually get that help. You already know what you need to do. You need to see a qualified healthcare professional.

When you need to talk or express yourself, you can come here, but that doesn't take the place of professional help. It can be very difficult to take that first step and make an appointment. Maybe you could start by talking with your primary care physician. He or she can help you get an appointment with someone who can help you address your depression. If you haven't been diagnosed, that's a good place to start. From there, it can be determined if you need medications, counseling or therapy, or a combination of both.

You're missing out on life when you don't have to be. Help is available, but you have to take the first step. I'm sorry your husband doesn't "get it." Try including him as you start getting the help you need. Maybe with a bit of education about depression, he'll come around and be a big part of your support system.

Please keep posting and let us know how and what you're doing.

    Wishing you well,
