I know from her posts that MerelyMe has success taking melatonin. I have anxiety so badly that I take Mirtazapine at night to sleep which works great, but it does give you quite an appetite. It also takes about a week to get used to it and not feel groggy the next day. Others take Trazodone at night to sleep. But, as always I would encourage a more natural approach like daily exercise and a regimented daily routine. Yes, you do need your sleep and I hope you're able to get it and wish you the best.

Hi Starshine

Yep...this is a common issue for those of us who suffer from mood disorders.  I have had difficulty getting to sleep and also staying asleep and what helps me is Melatonin...it is a natural sleep aid that you can find at any health food store or even the supermarket.  It usually has me asleep within an hour.

Upon recommendation from my doctor I also use Benadryl on ocassion...in order to stay asleep.

Now...please know that I am not a doctor and that you do need to check anything you take with your doctor first.  You want to be sure there are no possible bad interactions with anything you are already taking.

Valerian is another supplement which can help you to calm down and feel relaxed enough to sleep.

Chamomille tea can also help you to feel relaxed and be ready for sleep.

You may want to ask your doctor if anything you are taking is causing your insomnia or trouble sleeping.

Hope this helps some.  Thank you for your question.

1. Do you have difficulty going to sleep because you can't turn your thoughts off long enough to relax?  Try meditating on the darkness behind your closed eyes.  Or repeat one word to yourself like "peace."  Keep doing so.  It works for me.

2. Do you feel restless, and that's the problem?  I have to take Klonopin and Trazodone at night in order to sleep.  Otherwise, my legs are twitchy and I keep turning over and flipping my pillow and so forth.

3. Do you drink a lot of caffeine?  Limit it after 3pm.

4. Sometimes I play 4 recordings of thunderstorms consecutively and then keep them repeating.  Then when I wake up during the night, I turn off the CD player.  These nature recordings are often helpful -- waves on the beach, prairie sounds, rainforest sounds, etc.

5. As someone else recommended, getting exercise can help, but do it earlier in the day, not when you are about to get ready for bed.  I use a treadmill for 30 minutes every morning.

I tried Melatonin and it didn't help.  But, like Merely Me, my pdoc has also suggested trying Benadryl.  Benadryl doesn't work for me, either.  Meditation and medication are what works for me best.
