Mental Health America Conference Pre-Coverage
Good morning, everyone!
I'm headed out to Washington, DC, today to attend the Mental Health America Centenial Conference, "Celebrating the Legacy, Forging the Future." Kate and I will be attending the conference to learn and bring information back to you. The conference is described this way by MHA:
"Mental Health America has the distinct honor of being the first "mental health" advocacy and education organization. We were founded in 1909 by Clifford W. Beers who experienced firsthand the mistreatment of individuals with a mental health condition. Beers' pioneering work and vision revolutionized attitudes and started a movement that changed the face of mental health care in America. This year marks Mental Health America's 100th Anniversary and we want everyone who shares our vision to help us celebrate how far we've come over the last century, and explore how we can continue to work together to further advance the mental health movement."
It should be an exciting conference. The speakers include Tipper Gore, Chris Jennings, George Stephanopoulos, Rosalynn Carter, and many more. Mrs. Carter will be presenting the very first Mental Health America Legacy award to Senators Edward Kennedy and Pete Domenici in recognition of their leadership of the recently passed Mental Health Parity Act, which will bring parity in insurance coverage to people with mental health conditions.
It's going to be a great week, and I'll be writing to you from DC through the week.
