Vitamin B12 culprit

By Rusty Saturday, January 12, 2008

I have had a reappearance of symptoms of depression and anxiety in the past 6 months after being free from them for 15 years. I have been on Zoloft since my second child was born when I experienced severe and ongoing depression/anxiety. The Zoloft has always worked beautifully for me.  Anyway I was surprised at the return of symptoms. My doc raised the dose of Zoloft but it just didn't seem to be working as well as usual.

Anyway after a battery of tests , hormone levels for Perimenopause, thyroid function, liver function, they found a deficiency in vitamin B12.  A google on this vitamin brought up the fact that deficiencies in B12 can bring about neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression and anxiety. So looks like some B12 injections for me and then monitoring of levels. Apparently only a small amount of B12 is actually metabolised and if you have tummy problems( reflux etc ,I have a hiatus hernia) vitamin B12 may not be absorbed.

I am also taking Omega 3 fish oils because I have read some interesting articles about O3 and depression.  Anyway check you B12 intake...its important to the way we feel.

Thanks for your post, Rusty.  I am slated for some bloodwork and will definitely have them check the B12 levels.  Maybe that will give me some more zip - I remember my grandmother having B12 shots for energy (she had thyroid issues, too, and ultimately had her's removed).  I have had my thyroid checked bi-annually and it's never been the culprit although I'm still hoping ... that would be a somewhat easy fix.

Hang in there ...that's all any of us can do.

Out of Control

Rusty,

I have been on Zoloft for 5 days now for depression, anxiety and I'm finding that I'm not sleepy like when I initially start taking it at night. Did you take Zoloft in the morning or night? I'm using a sleeping aid and find rush of anxiety with the sleep fighting it makes for a long night.

Hi Thanks for you comment. I don't remember finding Zoloft made me sleepy and it certainly doesn't do that now. You probably are only getting side effects and not much benefit for the anxiety yet. It will take a couple of weeks. I try to take my zoloft in the middle of the day. I have found that works best for me. I was taking an anti anxiety med (Xanax low dose) as I needed it when I started taking Zoloft but after the zoloft kicked in I didn't need it any more. I also hate feeling sedated. I fight that feeling too. You shouldn't have that once your body is used to it in a couple of weeks. Sorry its taken so long to reply, have been down the coast on Holidays. Best wishes Rusty
