Anyone ever been in a drug trial?

By Penny Sunday, July 18, 2010

Hi All,

I have just decided to participate in a Stage III drug trial for a new drug that is a serotonin and norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor. Has anyone participated in a trial before? I've taken a few other drugs before that didn't work or made things worse. I thought that if this could work and at least I could have a few months of relief I could get some work done. I just need a break. It would be bad if this drug works well and then I can no longer take it when the trial ends. What are your experiences for those who have done a clinical trial?

They would also supply the mediction, so you wouldn't be out the cost of that for a few weeks or months.

I wasn't in a new med trial, but I did participate in a study that compared the effectiveness of Seroquel vs. Zyprexa.  I got my medication free for one year from my regular pharmacy.  I even started out on Seroquel and it didn't work, and they agreed to switch me to Zyprexa.  So there is that.  But you have a valid concern about what would happen if the trial med really, really helped and was not going to be approved by the FDA for another year or two.

My sister participated in a study/trial for about 12 yrs.  Everyone else in her study died (of cirrhosis) within about the first 5 years.  She was in a blind study where she didn't know if she was getting the med or a placebo.  But we believe she got the medication and it extended her life over double what it might have been.

Hello Penny and welcome to the site!

No...I have never been a part of a clinical trial but I do find it fascinating.  I hope that the drug does make a difference for you and doesn't have many side effects.  You will definitely have to update us on how this is going for you.

In the meantime here is our information on the site about clinical trials and how they work.  I am sure that mostly though...you want to hear about the personal experience of going through a clinical trial.  I hope that in addition to Donna...more people chime in.

Hope this helps.  Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the feedback! The trial is going well, so far! This is an interesting study because it is long-term and designed to study relapse with this drug. So, I know I am taking the study drug now, and in 2 months I could be put on a placebo, but have a 2/3 chance to continue taking the medication. They will then track how long it takes for participants to relapse. I'm only about 3 weeks into taking the medicine and have shown a lot of improvement, with minimal side effects. Hopefully if I (and others interested in a new SNRI) am lucky, it will be approved.

It is amazing how much more stuff I can accomplish when I'm not depressed. It's certainly true for me that antidepressants do not make me happy, they just help me feel not depressed so I can do the things that do make me happy. Best wishes to anyone reading this and I hope you are finding help and resources to alleviate your depression. Knowing the cyclical nature of my chronic depression, I am sure I will relapse in the future, so I am glad to have this website as a resource. Thanks all.
