Been on Zoloft for four days feel like crap

By beatle bailey Tuesday, January 15, 2008
Okay I was just diagnosed with PD and have been on Zoloft for 4 days I'm extremly tired and I don't feel better until the afternoon. I feel like I'm in a fog I know it take 3-4 weeks before gets into your system, but when do you feel better?

Hi Beatle,

I have been on Zoloft for a couple of years now & it has worked very very well for me until recently. It has done wonders for my panic & anxiety & still continues to work for that. I lost my best friend in August & have been dealing w/ depression since then but I think its the circumstances not any failure on the part of the drug that has me feeling this way. Anyways, I ramble.

I found that in the beginning I began to feel better (i.e. less anxious) after the 3rd week on the drug. For me, the symptoms did not cease entirely until I was up the max dose of 200mg so that took a couple of months. After reaching 100mg however I stopped having full blown panic attacks that take me down at the knees. Knock on wood, those have not reoccurred.

Best of luck to you ! Stick with it & try to remain hopeful.

Hugs,

Dee

Dee,

Thanks for the info it's kind of lonely out here with this info I'm going to continue I think I should be at 100mg by the end of the month. I just had one more question I take it at night and initially it would make me fill sleepy now it doesn't make me sleepy, but instead anxious even more along with a sleep aid it makes for long night.Should I start taking in the morning instead now..?

1/17/08 5:20am

I've always taken it w/ all my other meds when I get up in the afternoon. (I work nights.) I wonder if it's the combo of the Zoloft w/ your sleep aid. Talk to your doc & let them know if it keeps making you anxious. They should definitly know about that. I've never heard of anyone reacting like that before. Best of luck & write anytime.

Hugs,

Dee

Hi:

I am sorry you aren't feeling well.

I have B/P and found out I had it when I was 40 years old.  I am now 67 and have been feeling good for about 2 months.  Do you like to read?  I do a lot of reading although it is slow sometimes it does take you mind off of your troubles.

When I am down I have to do one minute at a time.

Good luck,

Alice Ann

Alice,

I'm taking it day by day. I talked to my doctor today and switched to taking it in the morning. Right now I am so wired so hopefully I will be more relaxed tonight.I do read the bible versus and Anxiety and Phobia workbook by Ed Bourne it gives me hope when I really start to feel bad. Thanks for asking..and glad you have been feeling good.

Hi again,

The fog and not feeling better until the afternoon is just part of your PND. I used to have the same scenario. You are lucky that yours was diagnosed early and treatment is being done. Good Girl! It took me 18 months to find proper treatment and I lost a lot of time with my baby by then. Its really hard to cope with the tiredness when you have a baby and PND just exaggerates the tiredness. You will feel better. Just try to get through one day. I couldn't sleep either because of the anxiety but the zoloft worked beautifully for me. So hang in there. You will be okay.Keep in touch on the site. You need to have some support right now to get through the rough patch. Best wishes Rusty

Thanks for the support. I switched to Morning taking itHappy and now I'm wired with an increased dosage from 50 to 75mg for a week then to 100mg finally. Just trying to get through the next 2 weeks. I thought I would be able to sleep last night easily, but it came hard. It was a battle I guess I was panicking about sleeping. If it's not one thing it's another. I have found that i GET THE SAME LITTLE AMOUNT OF SLEEP WITH BRUSPAR. So I'm going to try relaxation techniques instead and sleep more during the day..this is my life right now...sorry to ramble it's just nice to have a lifeline

For the moment just sleep when you can.  Check how many breaths you have per minute and try to keep it under 12. The overbreathing can bring on the anxiety and panic. Keep tea and coffee to a minimum because that can add to the anxiety at this stage.. If you are too wired increase the dose more slowly. Taking it up too fast can trigger the anxiety symptoms in the initial stages. This will even out once the antidepressant starts to work. Do whatever it takes to get through these few weeks. I know when you feel like you do it feels like a few weeks is a very very long time but just try to get through each day. At the times when you are feeling better...try to really enjoy that time and know that you will have better times ahead.  This will all go away and you will feel normal again...I used to think "what if it doesn't go away". I promise you it does. Thinking of you. Rusty

I'm going nuts reading too much about side effects because I've had so many - sweaty palms and feet, anxiety, weird dension in my neck, weird sensitivity in my teeth and had nausea for the first 3 days, lots of gas too that is painful in the chest area until I can get myself to burp then helps relieve the pressure.  Did any of you have these?  I took zoloft before as a replacement for lexapro (lexapro was horrible) when I switched to zoloft it was instant relief. after 6 months my doctor said it was ok to wean off zoloft and was fine then anxiety started again and it got so bad I begged to get back on zoloft, but now that I just started on the zoloft again for anxiety the side affects are bothersome and I'm feeling like I made a mistake getting back on. anyone else feel like this in the beginning?

Hi Lily,

This is my 2nd week on Zoloft will go into my third week on Saturday. I had heartburn so bad that I went to the ER because my chest felt like it was exploding. My doctor told to take 150mg of Zantac and hour before I go to bed also take it again in the morning. Someone on another post also suggested Mylanta that might work. I also switched from taking Zoloft at night to the morning instead. The medicine's optimal working time is 4-6 hours from taking it which was waking me up at night..not good when you already feel unstable. So far doing those things have helped tremendously. All of this will subside once the medicine has gotten into your system which is going to be a about two more weeks I have read, but what keeps me going is that my panic attacks and anxiety has decreased greatly which brings me closer to being myself. Please hang in there try to distract with an activity for this period. I have taken up knitting and it has helped. I know it's hard because at a time when you really need to feel like yourself you don't just hang in there and give it more time. I don't have the really bad chest heartburn now so that's my testament..keep me posted also if you can get out read the anxiety and phobia workbook by ed bourne..

Hi,

thank you! I'm going through a tough time at work too so the anxiety isn't relieved much. One of my three bosses passed away Tuesday and the other two have been out of the office since then devastated - leaving me in charge which at this point is really taking it's toll. I just took too xanax and had to go for a walk in this frigid cold with my dog because otherwise I was ready to call 911! my heart rate was at 145 and I couldn't get it down below 100 so of course I freaked out. I'm glad I went for the walk though because maybe the cold or just doing something mundane like picking up dog poop helped. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning so I feel a little better knowing I'll see her and can get some more feedback from her.

Thanks again, I'm scared and trying a ton to think rationally knowing that this fear and anxiety comes from irrationality. I will definitely get the book tomorrow and dig right in. Reading and writing always help.

so how long did it take for the anxiety to taper off? I'm on my 9th day and still have to take xanax daily for the anxiety. Sorry, just frustrated and wondering if the zoloft is making the anxiety worse or if I'm just being desperate.

thanks.

lily,

What dosage are you on? I started at 50 mg and it wasn't until about the 7 or 8th day that I started to feel as though it was working to reduce anxiety. I just started the 100mg yesterday which is the maximum that I'm supposed to be on for now and I don't feel the usual sleepiness that I use to feel. Saturday started my 3rd week I can sleep now at night more not as much as I want but more because I don't have as much jitteriness. I  have been told from other post that it takes 3-4 weeks before you really feel as though your life is back to "normal" and that's what I'm waiting on trying to stay positive. I write daily affirmations, pray and just practice good inner self talk. Whenever i THINK THIS WILL NOT END ..I say to myself it could be worse.. this will get better I'm taking medicine along with therapy and it will get better..you got to believe in yourself more than ever now.. I know it's hard given the circumstances I know..

Thanks so much. I am on 50 mg, that's what I took for the 6 months before and that's what worked which is why my doctor hasn't upped the dosage. I took a xanax yesterday to take the edge off and it was like heaven, I was able to do family stuff with my little girl and actually enjoyed it! Thanks a bunch, I'm going to keep thinking positive and getting some sort of workout into my day. I finally felt some hope yesterday and need to keep the long term effects in mind.

thank you!

My sister started Zoloft 1 week ago, and her daugher has convinced her that she cannot take Zoloft.  My sister has had a rough week with BP that was already a problem.

My sister's doctor had told her to take Zoloft at bedtime, but instead she had been taking it in the mornings........so she felt bad during the day and was in and out of bed.

Please hang in there with the Zoloft and take a Xanax when you feel overly anxious.

I am so sad my niece has decided my sister needs to stop taking Zoloft.

I take Celexa (Lexapro), and I take a Xanax when I need it.

Please ride this out for yourself and for your family.  It is important to enjoy Life.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ruth

Some people begin to see

some relief within 5 days,

you won't get the full affect for 3 weeks as you indicate.

My understanding is that Zoloft should be taken at bedtime.

Is anyone else aware of this?

I understand it can make a big difference in how you feel during the day vs. taking it in the morning.

I don't think there's a rule that confirms when to take Zoloft at bedtime or morning. It depends on how your body responds to the drug. Initially I had problems with Zoloft because it acted as a stimulant at night and it kept me up. So I switched it to the day and it worked for me it actully gave me more energy in the day because of how it affected my body. Again it depends on how your body responds to this drug. Hopes this helps:)
