Depression and Excuses: What Are You Putting Off?

By Merely Me Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Hi everyone.

Thought I would do something a little different today and do a little fill in the blank exercise with you.

Many of you may find that sometimes it is really hard to get the motivation to do things which are healthy for us.  Let's make a short list of things we all probably want to do but we seem to have every excuse in the book for not doing.  And I do want to preface all this by saying that depression makes everything hard.  Depression is not an "excuse" but a real challenge and at times it may feel like a rock like obstacle.  Yet in addition to our depression we also create excuses not to do the things we really want to do.  So I thought it might be both interesting and helpful to explore and debunk these excuses.

Here are some possible physical and mental health goals you may be avoiding:

  • Exercising
  • Eating healthy
  • Taking time to relax
  • Getting therapy
  • Making an appointment to get a physical
  • Being assertive
  • Taking time to go out with friends
  • Going out of your comfort zone to try something new

These are just some examples of goals we may have for ourself but for whatever reason we sabotage our efforts to actually do these things because we have a zillion excuses.

1.  Tell us one physical health or mental health goal you have been avoiding.

2.  List all your excuses!  Let's hear each and every one of them.

3.  Next we will help you to debunk your excuses so that you can do what you really want to do.

Here is my personal example:

1.  Exercise has been hard for me in the past months and I have been avoiding it like the dickens even though I know it is good for me.

2.  My excuses for not exercising include:  I am too tired, I don't feel like it, I am sore from my last work out, I will do it tomorrow, it won't work anyway, I don't have time, I am having a bad multiple sclerosis day, I have PMS, I have my period (the last two excuses can carry me through two weeks at least), it is too hot, I don't care, I don't want to get sweaty, I would rather eat cake.

Actually I have more excuses but I will stop there.  You get the gist.

But the thing is..when I actually do start to exercise, it feels good!  So sometimes it is just that getting up and starting to do the thing you want to do that you know in the end will be good for you.

Okay...who's turn is it?  We want to hear it!

We all have excuses for not doing what is good for us.  Mine is too tired, no motivation, maybe tomorrow (tomorrow never comes).  I know all the things I should be doing to help myself, but I have let my depression take over.  There are so many things I could do to help myself, but they don't interest me anymore.  Sometimes I need a push and then feel better about what I accomplished.  Unfortunately it's just like I have given up.Cry

Hello MM; So, did you ever watch You Don't Know Jack? Or did you choose not to? CHOICE! CHOICE! CHOICE! In my humble opinion life is completly made up of choices. Those that you make, or if you are too young, or are old enough, smart enough, and just don't care, or don't want to be held responsible for your choice. If you don't make the choice it will be made for you. First and formost, here we go............No matter  who put it there, or for what reason, right or wrong.. YOUR DNA was carried by the fastest, strongest, and the smartest sperm out of millions of them. You came thru The Champion!!!!! What A team You Made!!! You are you because of you. Who would you be if # 10 sperm and his or her DNA had cut you and #1 off at the pass. WOW!!!!!. What if they did and you are # 10. This could change the whole world!!!!!!!! DOUBLE WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I guess my younger Sister and I made the wrong choice, if we had a choice of eggs in our Mothers egg nest. She died 1975..MS. Do we blame Her,  NO. Do we blame GOD, NO. We can't blame OUR MS on anything till they find the cause. Then maybe find the cure. Till then we'll have to live with IT.     How I cope. I have two diseases, but only ONE of them is terminal..GOD BLESS YOU & YOURS....Mike......

Good job, Michael, you are staying in the fight.

I know that in our day & age that if I dont take care of myself it wont come without impunity so....

I could do more exercise/major excuse I hate going out of breath

Eating Healthy/ no excuse I eat very healthy ty

time to relax/ guilt is my excuse as I always like to be busy at something

getting therapy/ I did and I dont see myself needing more, altough it has been suggested to me to be a better care giver to my son, I'll be the judge of that.

getting a physical/ I plead guilty I'm in denial

Friends/ I do see them but as often as I should (Born Loner)

Being assertive/ no excuse in fact at times I should hold back as I dont keep my tongue in my pockets.

Something new/ If I look closely enough each day brings something new, but I would like to try jumping out of a plane this summer, or base jumping that would be so coolllllll, cant tell my boy tough.

the main thing is getting my ass in for a check up with the cardiologist & endocrynologist.

I know I need exercise, but I HATE it.  Haven't found any form yet that I think is fun.  Haven't done it for a while because I'm too tired, don't like to sweat, didn't lose any weight when I did it, resist doing things I'm "supposed" to do and because I think I get more exercise now when I'm retired than when I sat at a desk all day - there's always some *!?!!* chore to do around here.  I already do a bunch of things that are good for me but the list never ends!

Judy, we could be twins! LOL I hate to sweat, I don't like "exercising" because "someone" told me to, etc etc. I have found a way to trick myself into a routine, and it beats a sharp stick in the eye. I get up at 5:05 (because the number looks good LOL) and go to the gym. I first stretch and listen to my meditation. By the time I'm done stretching, I have found my full breath. Then I go to the exercise bike and read a book (THE WISE HEART) on my Kindle for 20-30 minutes. When I get into bad sleep cycles, like these past days, it is hard to get up. I just do it in zombie mode. Without thinking about it. By the time I get to the gym 5 minutes away I figure it would be stupid to go back home to bed after all that work! Then the real fun begins when daycare kids start coming at 7:30.

I think sometimes we have to overcome our excuses by just doing something. I'm going back to school next year (at 49yo!) for my master's in an area I really love. I have a different degree because Statistics scared me off. "I don't do math" because: I'm no good at it, it is too hard, I can't do it. Stats is still a requirement, so I'm going to eat that elephant, one bite at a time!

Something that gets in my way many times is telling myself "I'll do it when the time is right, then it will be easier..." There are so many excuses, aren't there?

Hi MM,

Out of your list of positive choices, I'm doing all everyday. I don't often feel great, but I'd rather try than sink. Who said life is like a bike ride? Einstein, I believe, said you can only get the hang of it by staying in motion. That's why I do everything, and leave the results to the one who pays all the bills (upstairs)!
