1. What things in your life would you like to change right now? I would like an antipsychotic that works but doesn't have side effects. I would also like to improve my relationships with my brother and sister.
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week? This week was an 8.5 on the Richter Scale...uh, I mean the Depression Scale. I really have felt well this week, and very calm. I did some volunteer sewing projects 2 whole days and never got impatient. THAT is earth shaking!
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood? I started taking more Zyprexa which always makes me feel better. And I have loosened the grip of negative thinking by concentrating on other things. For example, I did the volunteer work and also read 2 books.
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression? Think of one thing you would really like to do, that always makes you feel better. Whether it is visiting a grandchild, getting a massage, looking at old family photos with your kids, writing a poem, or or organizing your office (yes, some people like to do that.) Then do it!
I make teddy bears (called Memory Bears) from clothing supplied by those who have lost a loved one. They give me the person's favorite clothes -- one even brought a tablecloth -- and I use a Simplicity pattern. The pattern also makes a bunny and a dog. It is a bit tricky the first time you make one of these, but after that it only takes about 2 1/2 hours to make. I never meet the families who get them, but it is very rewarding.
Thank you for the encouragement!

1. What things in your life would you like to change right now? My financial situation, I'm unemployed because of an incident at work with my supervisor, she more or less attacked me for no reason at all,, well not a good enough reason for the way I was treated,,and I probably won't be able to get unemployment because of it,, I don't know..
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week? 3 The gas man came to shut off gas yeh!!! Luckily I was able to write a check. I should hear from unemployment on Mon.
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood? I try to eat healthy. Lots of fruits and veggies,,, and I have to push myself to exercise,,,literally..
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression
I try to get all the info I can on the subject.. Just knowing helps me, meaning that there is so so many other people just like me and that something can be done.. I love watching comedy whether it's movies, tv shows or comedians.. I love the video of Bill Cosby - Himself it's hilarious.. There's an older movie with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O'Neil - What's Up Doc?? one of my favs!!!!!!
I love The Abyss, Casablanca, Sunset Boulevard, Silence of the Lambs, and several of the Star Trek movies. Plus Alien and Aliens. Also The Hunt for Red October and Das Boot. Wonder what our movie choices say about us? There used to be a classic movie theater within walking distance and it was a lot of fun to see the really great movies on the big screen. The ones I really like, I watch them over and over.

1. What things in your life would you like to change right now?
I first thought: I'm already working on this, I have no real cause to complain. Then I realised I would love to have my own place, and my own financial independence... but then being on disability pension is how I can do my course (I wouldn't have the energy to work and do it) so yeah, I'm going to be content with my lot (for now) and not complain cause all in all I haven't got much to whinge about right now.
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week?
Probably about a 7 or 8... surprisingly seeing as I'm unwell (cold and stomach bug thing)... but I did return to my course, after the two week break, so that helps.
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood?
Returning to my acting course. Also, and this is probably cliche and kinda bad, but I like one of my teachers so just being around him lifts my mood... hehe, I'm such a cliche, falling for the teacher, lol.
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression?
Find something that you enjoy doing. Preferrably something that will get you up and about at least a bit - whether its organising things, going for walks, joining a group (you can do small classes in all sorts of things). Gives you something to focus on and pulls you out of your head and helps you get back into life.
Okay, let's see....
1. What things in your life would you like to change right now? Not too much, actually, except if I could carve off about 30 pounds right now. I'd like to have more money so I could help my son not lose his house.
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week? I would say it's been a 6, which is pretty good, especially considering that we had to put down our older dog, Chloe, two days ago, which broke my heart.
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood? Can't think of anything in particular. Getting enough sleep helps, as does getting out with friends.
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression? Whatever works for you. For me, it's been therapy and medication. The medication helps me make the best use of therapy.
Hope everyone has a good week-end!
What things would I like to change now ? Where I live. Im miles away from Support Groups, Im not near nature or trees.
Scale ? This week was about a 6. One good thing happened, I had been fighting through politicians for a house move and the Council are now going to move me, it wont be very far but will have a small easy to maintain back garden and be Arthritis friendly. I have made efforts to try and not be living as much a hermit existance as I am via meeting some old friends [married].
I got out more and walked quite abit.
My Lexapro was put up to 30mg because of Depression and I developed dreadful Acne on my face, really dreadful ! [I had acne for years and it ruined my teenage years and I wouldnt go out for days with it] so, Ive gone down to 20mg and am doing my best on that. I dont see P Doc until 24th June [in public you cant phone and bring apts. forward] so am doing all I can to avoid Toxic relatives, avoid people who bring me down. Sad news.ETC
Worst part- Another Stray Cat whose wandered into my life was thrown from a Car, hes scared, but not of me, I discovered [im bringing him to be neutered tommorw] that he has a massive tumour [?] and also a fracture and Fox bites. I just dont have the money [Vets are huge money here] so kindest thing may be to have him put down. this is very upsetting for me.
Thats it.
Hey, Rosemarie, the Veterinarians charge a lot too. A serious illness, or injuries are really expensive. It was nice of you to take care of the cat and I guess whoever dropped it off thought that was the solution to their problem. A slow, painful death for the cat, though.
At least if you have to put the cat down, it won't be like what it was facing.
Good luck with your move, I hope it is a certain thing for you and that they help you with moving.
Acne and I were close friends in school. Actually, maybe the only friend! :)
Good luck with that, too.
Hi Pau, Thanks for your kind words, and advise. Ive always worked in animal welfare [volunarily] somehow, animals seem to 'know' who to come to. This fella is wild, but lets ME stroke his tummy, coz i do relate well to all injured and abused animals. This is a v dangerous Road, so my guess is that they hoped he'd be killed by a Car. This is a common occurence in Ireland and we are now called 'The puppy farm capital of Europe' better not think about it - its Depressing ! I do what I can which is constructive. re- ACNE Paul, you are in the dime place with regard to Acne. I had the 'Mother of all Acne' from beautiful clear skin that was admired by all, I got this dreadful Monster Acne, The Devils rain on my face and neck. I had huge Boils, pustules, blackheads [the embarrassment of that as I washed my face 4 timed daily !!! I went from being 2nd in class at the pageant, to being Ugly Ducking with this disfigurement. I think its quite attractive in a man, especially the pock marks - think Richard Burton ?? But on a woman. I hid for years. You couldnt have been as bad as me, How come the big Red goozers always go for the top of your nose like Rudolf or a clown ?
I was watching a talk show, Dr. Oz, and they were talking about home remedies. This woman in the audience said if you take about 6 smashed uncoated aspirin and lemon juice, make into a paste apply to your face. Rinse. Then use baking soda and water like a paste. I noticed that my face is so smooth afterwards. But the Dr. agreed that it will help get a much clearer complexion. Just thought you may like.

1. What things in your life would you like to change right now?
My life is okay - it's my family's life I would like to change and that ain't happening. My nephew was hospitalized again for another suicide attempt. My brother and his family just seem so out of reality to me that I am just waiting for the whole situation to explode.. They are several states away and although this keeps the craziness from intruding on my life directly; I worry about my brother as he is my only living relative. Not being able to do anything depresses me.
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week?
My week was a 7 no real problems but the family worries.
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood?
I keep active - go out with friends. See my therapist.
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression?
Take your meds; see your therapist or group support or both. Practice not feeling sorry for yourself.

1. What things in your life would you like to change right now?
I would like to lose 70 pounds, not have rheumatoid arthritis, not struggle with depression and anxiety and be healthy!
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week?
A 7. I pushed myself out into the yard to work in my garden and fill my wild bird feeders and that helped my mood a lot. I also pushed myself to go to my therapy appointment, which always helps me, but I struggle to get myself there.
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood?
Making myself get outside into the sunlight and work in my garden, fill my wild bird feeders and smell the blooming lilacs. Once I get myself out and enjoy the beauty that is around me, I feel much better. Its just getting up the energy to get out of the house that is the hard part for me.
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression?
I have just recently started seeing a psychologist and that has helped me greatly. I don't feel so isolated, lonely and not in control. I know now that I am not the only one who is going through this and have found some understanding and validation as to why I am the way I am. Knowledge is power and I feel that my therapist is giving me back some power over myself.
Didn't get much sleep last night AGAIN (have chronic pain & pain management doc has been able to help only so much so he is sending me to a neurologist). I have way TOO MANY things that I would like to change so in order to not depress myself further & get overwhelmed I'm only concentrating on a couple--weight loss (put on 50 lbs. on the anti-psychotic medication so now on meds for high blood pressure & cholesterol & testing in diabetic range, but taking a diabetes educ. class to try to avoid meds for that, too, as both my parents were diabetic & I don't want to take any more meds); trying to get some balance in my life as I feel like circumstances are controlling me & I'm not living my own life, but just reacting to things life is throwing at me; get some semblance of a schedule so that I can do necessary things for weight loss & health like exercise & healthy food preparation & have time to enjoy my husband & a good book & the sunshine.
Things that have helped:
WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan--offered for no charge through NAMI {National Alliance on Mental Illness}, DBSA {Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance} & other organizations). WRAP helps you develop a "tool box" of things that help you maintain stability & keep you "on track" as it would be very easy for me to give up because of feeling overwhelmed rather than doing something about it like eliminating people who are not helpful even if they are family members, but if they are so negative & "takers" & drain me, they have to go!
Taking "baby steps" to get my life organized (masses of paperwork due to mail order medications & so many different docs & therapy & DBT & insurance co. messing up). One way I do this is to set a timer for only 15 min. & work on a project or chore (if a chore I rush around in a frenzy as it is "mindless" & it is amazing how much laundry can be folded or the kitchen counter cleared or rooms straightened up, etc. in 15 min.). Also, that gets me going (have bad procrastination habit due to feeling scattered & overwhelmed) & often will continue the chore or project once the initial 15 min. is over, but if not feeling like continuing I still fell "successful" & reward myself w/some reading time.
Individual therapy (FINALLY found a therapist who is really helping me change my core beliefs & dysfunctional coping skills, etc. instead of just sympathizing w/me & telling me, "No wonder you feel the way you do." For me intellectual understanding of why I think & feel in non-healthy ways doesn't help me not do it!! Knowledge isn't powerful enough for me to change! I need tools & have gotten them from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
Also, have benefitted from EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) for PTSD. Love all thes acronyms!!
Getting a meds provider who spends 45 min. w/me (psychiatric nurse practictioner) who really know me & my life & works in collaboration w/me.
Writing up a schedule each day so I don't flounder around, but get things accomplished & I do schedule in reading or knitting time.
Try to combat my natural desire to isolate by attending a support group, taking classes (knitting, computer, tennis, etc.) as I find it too intimidating to try to be one on one w/a person. In a group w/a focus then you can always talk about your dropped stitiches of lousy overhead shot! If I haven't left the house for a couple days & have no plans to I'll go to a coffee shop w/a book to just be around human beings as I find if I don't I do become almost agorophobic (sp?).
When going through a depression remind myself I've been through this before & can make it through it again & use tools learned in DBT. Remind myself I will not always feel depressed & hopeless. Read motivational books or listen to talks on ted.com or listen to something humorous on the PBS web site like "Wait, wait, don't tell me!"
Look back & see what progress I've made (55 now & been ill since I was 15).
Have gratitude for my loving & loyal & saintly husband of 36 years & my wonderful 2 children who love me despite having me as a mother & want to spend time w/us. When we get together (children live in different states) we laugh so much about my antics (husband calls me "Lucy" as in Lucy Ricardo) & also my husband's, as he has done quite a few himself like giving me grief about how long it takes me to pack for a trip & how I overpack & then once when we arrived in Hawaii & he realized he (the fast & perfect packer) had forgotten to pack any underwear but didn't want to admit it said he needed to go to the drug store to "get underwear (meant to say "film") for my camera!" He couldn never pass a lie detector test!
Dump the perfectionistic ideas that immobolize me from even starting many things. Learn when it is OK to just do an OK job. Write down a time schedule for dinner parties or I'll end up washing walls (perfectionism & a bit of germ phobia combined is not a good combo!) at 5:00 p.m. when the guests are arriving at 5:30 & I haven't started dinner or taken a shower (have actually done that & had to cancel the dinner party & claim I was "ill" which I actually was as I couldn't stop cleaning).
Help other people through volunteer work (like co-leading a support group for women in the local jail w/a therapist) or teaching a class through NAMI to mental health providers from a "consumer's" point of view or speaking to community groups like the Kiwani's to try to reduce stigma, etc. but also have to be careful to not sign up for too much, because then my life balance goes out of whack again (hard for me to say "no").
When I think about it, there are so many tools & resources that are available to us nowadays. My mother had severe bipolar & committed suicide when I was 15. Nowadays she may have been helped. So even if we have depression, bipolar, anxiety or other mental health problems we have so many opportunities to get as healthy as possible & I count all of you here as being helpful to me, too. You all are very supportive, kind, insightful & genuine.
Thanks so much for such interesting dialog.
1. What things in your life would you like to change right now? Right now I would like to be financially stable.
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week? This has to do with the question above. I am rating this week a 1. I'm on SSDI and I got more going out than coming in and I can't get caught up. With rent, car payment. car insurance, medications, electric bill etc I am in the negative in my bank account and I, as I said, I can't get ahead. I don't buy anything and don't have any credit cards. I do have food stamps thank goodness. So any advice I would appreciate. I am using all resources I can find.
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood? Yes I go to a support group 3 times a week. Talking to people with the same problems I have helps so much. Being around people is good for me.
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression? Find a good Dr and follow his plans for you. Find a support group in your area.
You may also qualify for SSI -- have you checked on that?
Hey Lonelyone!
I hear ya. I have been poor for more years in my life than I have had any money. It does suck. It is hard. You have to look at all resources to help you such as co-ops for food sources, govt. resources, and any type of job you can get.
It is a tough economy right now...I know.
If there are any specific resources I can find for you...let me know.
Thank you so much for your comment.
Hi Donna, I am already getting SSDI
Thank you MerelyMe, I have exhausted all the resources I can find. If you know of anymore please let me know. Thank you for responding.
Pat
Yes, I understand you get SSDI, but you can ALSO get SSI. The following comes from the SSA.gov site:
Some public benefits do not affect your Social Security disability benefits
If you receive Social Security disability benefits and one of the following types of public benefits,
your Social Security benefit will not be reduced:
-------------------------
So, see you can get both. Check out www.SSA.gov and it will answer all your questions. Best wishes!
Donna
I will call them and find out but I am 59 so I'd have to wait till I'm 62 if I do qualify for it.
Thank you Donna
1. What things in your life would you like to change right now?
Isolation
2. On a scale of one to ten how would you rate this week?
7 - not horrifyingly depressed all the time, and survived a family visit without going to zero, yay me.
3. Has anything worked well for you as far as helping you to improve your mood?
Creative projects of all sorts. Also - check out 29gifts.org - fun/free way to focus energy externally even if you are (ahem) isolated. (I work alone but am retiring soon.)
4. What would you recommend to others as to how to best treat depression?
Make lists of things that work for YOU. Reward yourself. If you are frustrated with a treatment or ??? -- keep asking questions. Remember, your doctors work FOR you - not the other way round. (That isn't the same as not being nice.)
My list this week: Make 10-20 contacts of all types with others, exercise, and do 20 minutes yoga a day. Also - found this resource and like it!

SO SORRY about all the junk at the beginning. I copied from a Word document & obviously did something wrong! Hope you can read the stuff BELOW the junk OK.
I provided some links that might be useful (I found the handbook very useful), but there is a lot of JUNK that showed up at the top as I copied it from a Word docuument so, hopefully, you can get past that & read about the Disability Law Handbook...
