Feeling Grateful: Countering Feelings of Depression

By Merely Me, Health Guide Tuesday, February 01, 2011
Hi everyone   I wanted to preface my question of the week today with a thank you to all of our members.  I have seen some wonderful things happen on our site due to your willingness to reach out.  We all have challenges in our life including battling depression.  Yet despite hav...
How Was Your Week?

Today I feel grateful that my confidence in acting is returning. I did a free acting workshop last night, and because it is free it is full of people who are beginners or may not really even be into acting but want to improve communication and confidence, so compared to others there I feel so knowledgable. And confident.

For the first time, since I was a kid, I volunteered first for a drama activity without knowing what it would be. It ended up being an improvisation exercise where one person was of lower status, being bossed about by the other person playing higher status. I demonstrated the exercise with the teacher for the class and got lots of loud laughs being the incompetent, shy, screw up lower status (sort of the stereotype, like Manuel from Fawlty Towers).

Once upon a time I was always the first to volunteer. That was so long ago I barely remember it. Yesterday I did it again... and I did well. You couldn't wipe the grin off of my face if you tried.

So I'm grateful for my return of confidence in acting. And I'm grateful for new opportunities. And I'm grateful to everyone who has helped me get here. Here's to hopefully continued improvement.

Wow Lyra!

This is fantastic.  It really is.  I think that you have such a love and passion for acting that nothing is going to stop you.  I am so glad to hear that you are feeling confident and taking some risks.  Good for you.

Great to see you and thank you for all the positivity you bring to the site.  It is infectious!

Thanks, Merely Me, for your kind words.  I'm grateful for YOU and the way you care about everyone in this community.

Thinking about it, I'm grateful to be retired - grateful that it worked out so that I could retire before normal retirement age.  It's wonderful to be my own boss (most of the time, anyway) and to be able to do things I wouldn't have the time to do otherwise - like participating on this site!

Hey you are very welcome Judy.  I did want you to know how important you are to this site.

I am glad you are retired too...more time to spend with us.  Smile

Hi M/M & all,

Like Judy I'm grtaeful to be retired "before my time". I'm particularly grateful for my health, my family & friends & just my whole life & experience that has brought me to where I am today.

Lastly, I'm grateful that it's +28f this morning in Las Vegas VS -28f in Vail CO, or being buried alive back East!  Surprised

Hey Carl!

So good to see you.  Don't be a stranger.

These are wonderful things to be grateful for.  And it sure has been crazy weather hasn't it?  I am not a person who is fond of cold and snow so...I am looking forward to spring myself.

Thanks for popping by...hope to hear more from you.

I am thankful that my internet is back up for one thing.  I have had neither TV nor Internet since Tuesday night at 5pm.  And all my fave TV shows are on Tuesday nights.  Oh well, I got some reading done.  Eudora Welty.  If you've never read any of her short stories, you've missed something great.  She was a photographer for WPA during the Depression then went on to write...won a Pulitzer Prize.  She shows the same empathy in her photos as she does in her stories.

Besides once again being able to read (after several years of not being able to concentrate) I am grateful for many, many things.  I'm grateful I live in the US and not in Egypt for starters.  I'm grateful no one tells me how to worship.  I'm grateful I have the disability income to buy food, clothing, shelter, and extras like TV and Internet.  I'm glad I can think clearly enough to respond to this post, too.

Today I am grateful for Donna and Judy encouraging me to be open and honest with my new MD about my stash of pills and for my doctor for listening to me without judging me. He said the most important thing he wanted me to take away from todays sessions was that our relationship was being built on trust and that this is a safe place for me.

This month has been the annaversary of several major losses in my life and the pain has been hard to bare, hense all the suicidal impulses. All I have done when I am alone is cry. Today he saw my tears. Today he saw my pain. I don't have to give him the pills until I am ready. Thank you again Judy and Donna.

I am grateful for my friends and family who are helping me thru this tragic time in my life. I recently shot myself and after several hours of surgery, a blood transfusion, and a trip to the behavioral health unit remarkably I am alive. I thank them for not leaving me during my recovery and visiting me every day. I am working towards being grateful to have survived.
