Thank YOU, Merely Me, for being the rock here. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving and that somebody at least does the dishes for you!
My favorites are the turkey and stuffing with gravy - unfortunately (or fortuntely, as the case may be), I can't eat much of them without getting sick, but just enough to enjoy. I'm making pumpkin and pecan pies - those are must-haves! The one bad thing about not hosting it this year is that there will be no leftovers
I might just have to make a turkey of my own soon.
Now, the next big thing will be all the things to do to get ready for Christmas - yikes! Every year it seems to come around more quickly. Well, that subject will be for another time. Hope everyone has an enjoyable day!
Merelyme,
I am most thankful for sites like this. The support you and others gives is immeasurable. I feel safe here and like sharing my life. I want to thank you for supporting and encourgaing me to share. I hope you have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
My favorite part of the meal has to my wife's smashed potatoes. I can't for the life of me make them the way she does. Oh and gotta have the gravy on top.
I like this holiday as I get to cook a lot of food. I used to be a cook/mentor and cooked for lots of people, so its in my blood. I made a pumpkin pie and a banana cream pie this morning. As for the stuffing recipe, my wife's daughter and I are gonna create our own. We're gonna use bread crumbs, chicken broth, roasted fennel, ham, sage, walnuts, salt and pepper. I will let you know how it turns out. I am cooking the turkey (upside down its moister that way), my wife is gonna make the red smashed potatoes and we're gonna have corn and green beans. My daughter and maybe my son will be here. I also cut up cheddar cheese, summer sausage, pepperoni and crackers.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
David
My fave TG dish is cornbread stuffing smothered with gravy. My family makes an awesome cornbread stuffing that isn't dry but moist and flavorful even without gravy. I wouldn't know the recipe cause I never do any cooking but I will try to dig up the recipe to post, good for Christmas dinner too.
Mostly I don't like the obligation of family gatherings if I am not in a good mood. But I find once I force myself to go I enjoy myself. I usually feel down that it is the end of a new year and I just feel disappointed in myself yet again. I know this is my own insecurity but I tend to project this on other people and will imagine they are all thinking this about me.
Every year, the women will make the side dishes, etc. desserts and everything, but we leave the turkey to the men. Then we all wait around as the turkey is coming out of the oven and start picking at it before it gets to the table. The youngest children in the family are then given the drumsticks and get their pics taken (we all have pics of us as babies chomping on drumsticks over the years). Then after the meal, the men go off to watch football and nap cause they are sooo exhausted from cooking the turkey lol and the women clean up and talk and laugh. It is nice.
I am thankful that I made it through another year and have another year to improve myself. It reminds me I am stronger than I think. I am thankful that I can come to this site and be completely open. I am thankful for my family and my pets, and that I am actually doing pretty good, considering.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!
No feast here so no favorite dish.
The challenge I face almost every Thanksgiving is being alone. My only family are my sister, nephew, and aunt. My nephew is with his dad. I have no idea what my sister is doing, and my aunt recently had a knee replacement, so I'm guessing she's home alone as I am. I don't mind being alone, but reading all about other people having fun with their families and what not, and not having one soul to talk to because everyone is so busy, can really get one down. Oh well.
No Thanksgiving rituals or customs.
This year, I am thankful for excellent mental health practitioners who take the time to help me and genuinely care. I feel as if I get a little better as each year goes by. Less relapses, less med changes, etc. I'm thankful I have health insurance that pays for me to see those pracitioners and pays for me to get my prescriptions. I'm also thankful for my 3 cats, Italy, Alex, and Ruby.

My favorite food is stuffing.
I had Thanksgiving at the soup kitchen where I work. Like a lot of other people I am basically alone at the holidays. My only family is my brother in South Carolina and I couldn't even get him on the phone Thanksgiving day. It is a little hard not to be depressed but I am trying not to let it get me down.
Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy holiday and don't eat too much.
I like everything Thanksgivingish except pumpkin pie or anything with pumpkin in it. I made the cranberry salad for the first time this year (we are taking turns.) My sister-in-law made an ass of herself...again. But she enjoyed it, or so it seemed, so to each her own.
A little weirdness: Mom and I cooked this huge turkey and had two platters of white meat and about a half platter of dark. Plus a ham. But no one ever eats the ham. Anyway, after everyone left and we had watched some football, I went in to make a turkey sandwich with leftovers. One of our beloved guests (all family) had managed to leave with all the turkey (and there was a lot left) hidden somewhere about themselves. The took it all except for one turkey leg Mom had stashed in the refrigerator because there wasn't any more room on the platters. I was angry about it until this morning when I took small satisfaction in the possibility they would choke on it. And not die, I don't mean that, just have to call the paramedics for a Heimlich heave-ho so we would all find out who took it.
Today, Mom bought me a new camera for helping her with Thanksgiving. I wasn't expecting anything or wanting anything for helping, but I am glad to finally have a camera again. I want to take a weekend trip down to where I went to college to do a photo shoot for my scrap book. A lot of memories there.
Otherwise, I'm sitting here with ham and cranberry salad in my tummy and listening to the Beatles' Abbey Road. I have museum passes and had planned to go see an exhibit this afternoon (since everyone else will probably be shopping) but it is freezing outside. And besides, I don't want to have to put my bra on and they also kind of frown at sweats and broken-down tennis shoes.
Hurray for staying at home with Thanksgiving leftovers and good music.
