Stumbling Upon StumbleUpon

By Merely Me, Health Guide Sunday, January 29, 2012
Okay so I have a confession to make.    (shhhh don't tell anybody but I am not real fond of social media)   There I said it.    In some ways social media can be a bit of a time sucking machine.  Yes there are some great things about it.  It can bring people togeth...

You are right about social media sucking up tons of time, but it is so nice to connect with people who have the same interests.  I have just recently returned from withdrawing into my depressive black hole, and my connections here make me feel so much better and like I am not alone.  I am not good at saying how I really feel, so this is a great place for me to share with others and learn.

I am going to check out Stumbleupon as well.  It sounds really fun and who couldn't use more fun in their life.  I'm excited about exploring.  Thanks for the post.  :)

Yeah that's right!  Who couldn't use a little more fun?  Sometimes you can find some great sites on there.  I just have to set some boundaries for myself as to the time allow for web surfing.

I hope you sign up!  Then I can see you on stumbleupon too.

Yay for us seekers!

Wonder what the other personality types are?

Thanks for your comment Rena...it is always good to see you.

I too am not a huge fan of the Social media thing. Twitter really annoys me when people post about the things they are doing, although I had a Twitter account for a short time until I got tired of reading about where people were, "Oh, I'm having lunch, or I'm thinking about what I want to do for the weekend, and there I am reading about this dribble wasting my precious present moment. Facebook, what can I say, I do have over 200 friends, and when I really investigate, I'm not really sure I would know them if I passed them on the street. For me its more of a race with my wife, and of course I'm winning.

You have to figure this is how the "hot new trends get a life." Its like you put a pair of overpriced poor quality "anything" on a Celebrity, and next week they are the hottest must have item. Back in the day, the 80's, musicians spent years gaining fans until they finally made it. Today, you have that what, 16 year old kid who is all over the radio and television, you know the kid I'm talking about who did a remake of Santa Claus is Coming to town. It was so painful to watch it should have been sponsored by a headache medicine pharmaceutical company.Laughing

Think I'll go and watch some Seinfeld episodes I have on DVR. :-) Does anyone really care? Ha!

Interesting points you make in writing the article.

Mmmhmmm....

I am totally grooving with what you are saying.  It is like we are all comatose and being spoon fed Internet fodder to make our brains weak and feeble.

Right...exactly...this is why talentless hacks can become popular.  It is insane. It is changing the way we view everything from writing talent to news to music and so forth.  I am consistently amazed at the popularity of...how can I put this politely...sh**  Who needs good quality writing nowadays when a spiffy title will do!   LOL

But I don't want to throw out the baby with bathwater.  There is some good in this...somewhere.  And more and more jobs are pushing for employees to jump on the social media bandwagon.

We will see where it takes us.  Have fun watching Seinfeld...great show!

Thanks for your comment.

I agree with the "being spoon fed Internet fodder to make our brains weak and feeble" comment.  It is constant information overload everywhere you turn.  It fills our time and our minds with loads of useless information.  It is so hard not to get caught up in it though.  It is like a huge whirl pool that just sucks you in.

Yeah...after awhile your brain goes numb.  :>)

How much silly stuff can one take in?  Most of it is not pertinent to our health or well-being.

I do fear being sucked in.  Someone will have to pull me out if you don't see me.  lol

Thanks for your comment Rena.

MM and all,

I have never tried Twitter, but do use facebook some.  I guess there are a couple of things I like about fb.  You can brag about your kids and grandchildren by showing off photos of them.  You can also support causes and find support.

I like the support here on this site better though, because we are focusing on the same issues--trying to improve our mood.

I did the Visual DNA personality test, although I wish the pics had been bigger so I could see them better.  My result was that I am a Harmonizer.  Of course, not all of the descriptions are accurate, but I think this sentence kind of give the gist of what a Harmonizer is: "Reliable and trustworthy, you seek harmony and balance in your life."  I'm not sure that is me, but close.

I might try out Stumble Upon.  I looked at your page, checked out your interests and was happy to see you are interested in the paranormal.  Me too!  That's only one of the interests we share, but not just everybody is interested in that area.

Thanks for another interesting and thought-provoking post!

Would love to see you on stumbleupon Patsy!

It is entertaining at least.  It is a nice way to find sites you never knew existed before.  The quiz was fun.  I like the way they did it using visuals.  It was a novel approach.

The paranormal...you betcha.  Hey...I have the whole set of Time Life books about the supernatural.  Somewhere buried in a closet.  I always liked that show In Search of with Leonard Nemoy.  It is all fun.  Growing up...my maternal grandmother came from Hungary...she and her family were gypsies.  She knew how to do tarot card readings...the whole bit.  Not sure what all I believe...I am a skeptic at heart but it is fun to read about.  And...to boot...one of my favorite shows on TV is...Supernatural.

Hope to see you on stumbleupon.  Who knows...I may break down and do the Twitter.  Do I hear a gasp from the crowd? LOL

Thanks for writing.  Always good to see you.

MM,

I had a good friend who learned to read Tarot cards.  One night a guy tried to mess her up by putting a several digit number on a piece of paper and gave it to her.  She was able to figure it out.  She had been having people write questions on a piece of paper and answering them.

So you came from gypsies.  Very interesting!!!

Did you ever watch the tv series "Angel"?  Gypsies re-ensouled him and watched him to try to keep him from having a moment of pure happiness and losing his soul again.  You may already know he was a vampire.  With the soul, he became a good guy and tried to help people; drank pig's blood, rather than human.

Forgot to say my friend shuffled the piece of paper in the deck before doing the reading.

Nope...I have missed out on this show.  Before Supernatural I like Charmed.  It was a cute show.  Someone told me that American Horror is really good.  But...I just don't have enough time to watch all these shows...but I would if I could.  :>)

Maybe I will DVR it and give it a try.

Thanks for the tip!

Hi MM, glad you're enjoying SU!!!  I like that you have a certain amount of time set aside to use this type of social media...that way you won't spend too much time at it or let it get to time comsuming.

I love the cat videos and the paranormal.  I didn't know you like that too!  Do you watch any of the ghost shows?  I know their kind of funky, but I enjoy watching Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International, even though my cynic radar goes off while watching them.  I do believe in ghosts or should say spirits of those who've passed.  Many of my relatives say that they saw their loved ones shortly after their passing, including my mom who was a big cynic and didn't believe in any of this stuff.  Love that you have gypsy heritage!

Hey Miss Pam!

It is very good to see you.  Yeah...SU is a lot of fun.  It is a nice visual way to keep your favorite sites in one place.  I am so glad you invited me to join in.

I would love to watch ghost hunters...again...I just don't have the time to watch all the shows I want to.  My faves are:  Supernatural, United States of Tara, In Treatment, The Big Bang Theory, Sunny in Philadelphia, Mad Men (it better return soon!), Modern Family, and I just bought the first season of Boardwalk Empire...people say it is phenomenal.  Usually when we eat dinner we watch a show as our kitchen table is covered with my son's art supplies.

Not sure about ghosts but sure why not?  Seems plausible to me as anything else.

Great to see you...here and there...and everywhere.  :>)
