ADHD & Depression: Statistics of Prevalence for Disorders, Treatment, Resources

By Merely Me Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Did you know?

Did you know that... Up to 30% of children with ADHD and up to 47% of adults who have ADHD have co-occurring depression? (Source:  Chesapeake ADHD Center of Maryland)

Depression is just one of the conditions which can co-exist with ADHD.  You can read about the other disorders and conditions which can frequently accompany ADHD here.

If you have ADHD you may find additional support on ADHD Central.

I never would have guessed that ADHD and depression are so interconnected but they clearly are. That is so interesting!

Yes indeed!  In talking to our members here, there are many who have adult ADHD and depression.  It is more common a connection than we may realize.

I am hoping that both sites can provide support and information to this population.

Thanks so much for your comment Kate!

yeah it just really sucks when you have to suffer from both of them. Thank goodness for  sites like these where you can become educated with vital information!!

Thanks Stephen!

I really appreciate how you have shared your experience with having these two disorders on both this site and the ADHD site.  I am wondering if you can tell us if the medications for either disorder ever don't jive with one another.

For example...my son takes Prozac for his mood problems but...it makes him a bit hyperactive and...he already has that issue to deal with.

So glad to see you and let me know if you write any more shareposts...I don't want to miss anything you write.

I actually just finished writing a second part to my story a earlier today. The two medications that I am taking is Adderall XR 25 mg and Lexapro 20 mg. I have been taking adderall since I have first been taking medication for ADHD. The adderall has worked great over the years. The worst part about the adderall is that it does increase anxiety, which is something that I suffer from. But since I needed for school I had always just dusted it under the rug. But that was also before I realized that I had a problem with depression and anxiety I have been taking the Lexapro since November and so far there hasn't been of a problem with the two of them interacting. The Lexapro has done a great job working with the adderall. I discussed with my doctor which anti-depressant/anxiety medicine I should take to battle both and Lexapro is the one we decided on that would work the best treating the depression and anxiety while not interfering with the adderall.
