Depression and Indulging in Self Pity
The Midweek Muse
A little inspiration to get you over the hump...
The topic this week is "The Pity Party"
In case you are wondering the photo is of me when I was in my twenties. Obviously I was at a party and not having a good time. My pity party was then captured for all eternity. And yes that is confetti in my hair.
So we have all been there. If you suffer from depression I am sure you have had moments, hours, days...maybe even weeks where you have yourself a good 'ol pity party.
I remember when I was a little girl and feeling down and my mama taught me this little song that I still sing today. And it goes like this:
Nobody loves me
Everybody hates me
Guess I'll go eat worms
Big fat juicy worms
Itty bitty little worms
See those little worms squirm
Bite their heads off
Squish their guts out
Throw their skins away
Nobody knows how a man can thrive
On worms three times a day!
When I am feeling down and self-pitiful I go around singing this song. Isn't it something...when you get into this sort of mood...it seems that your own dog hates you. It is just a bad funky state to be in. We have all been there in our own way.
Here are some quotes about self pity...it is a very human emotion.
God put self-pity by the side of despair like the cure by the side of the disease.
If the secret sorrows of everyone could be read on their forehead, how many who now cause envy would suddenly become the objects of pity.
Never allow your own sorrow to absorb you, but seek out another to console, and you will find consolation.
J. C. Macaulay
Self-pity comes so naturally to all of us. The most solid happiness can be shaken by the compassion of a fool.
Sometimes I go about in pity for myself, and all the while a great wind is bearing me across the sky.
Okay how about you? Do you have an image, poem, or story to share about self pity? If you are currently having a pity party invite yourself a friend. We have all been there. Let us help you through it.
