I know that we have many people who come to read our site without ever directly participating. Some of you, for whatever reason, may be reluctant to reach out here. I understand how hard it is to ask for help when you are depressed. I have been in that position before. It can be difficult to say that you need help.
When you are feeling very depressed you might feel that it is hopeless and why bother to get help. But I am here to tell you that it can get better and that there is hope.
While I wish that we could help each and every member who is feeling depressed this just isn't possible from an internet site such as this. While we can offer information and support we cannot provide therapy or replace your doctor or therapist. This site is also not manned 24 hours a day. So we want to make sure that you know where to go to get help when you are feeling like you just cannot cope anymore.
If you are feeling that you may hurt yourself or are feeling suicidal I want you to reach out to someone. Tell someone how you are feeling. Tell someone until they listen. Do not give up.
Here are some national hotline numbers to call if you are feeling like you cannot cope any longer and just want to end your pain. These are 24 hour hotlines and there will be a counselor there to help you. You can absolutely remain anonymous.
National Suicide Hopeline
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
If your loved one or friend is talking about suicide please call one of these numbers. Don't wait. Get help. I know it may seem frightening to call someone but it could save your loved one's life. If it is an emergency call 911.
In addition here is a huge list of hotline numbers for most every circumstance you can think of.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) may also be of help. Here is their number:
National Alliance on Mental Illness
Phone: 800.950.NAMI (800.950.6264)
Just so you know, I have called these hotlines myself when I was feeling like I just couldn't stand it anymore. And they helped...a lot. I believe that most people who are feeling suicidal don't really wish to end their life. They just want the pain to stop. And it can. But you have to reach out and get some help.
I hope this message helps. We care. We want you to stick around. Please do feel free to join our community, participate, and help others who are also having a hard time. We help ourselves by helping each other. You do not have to do this alone.
