If you have been watching or reading the news  tonight there has been a horrific report from a military processing center at Fort Hood Texas where a soldier has opened fire killing 11 people and leaving 31 wounded.  The soldier's name has been released as Army Maj. Nidal Malik ...

    Well put, M/M.

As always, my prayers are with those serving at home and abroad, as well as their loved ones.

By tomorrow night, a lot of this will probably have been resolved, the actions of the gunman known better, his background, what preceded these murders. Right now, all I know is that the soldiers killed and wounded could not have anticipated that one of their own would do this, for any reason.

I know on a military post, at least in my day, the only soldiers carrying firearms were military policeman and guards at sensitive areas. Perhaps it has changed, but I doubt it.

I was in an infantry outfit and even we had an arms room where all weapons were kept locked and few had access to that room.

I doubt very much that the medical center had any weapons stored there, even under lock and key. These soldiers were totally defenseless, like any of us, and they did not deserve to die.

The facts should become known soon. But it only matters if it can be prevented from happening again and I don't think we will ever find the keys to us all. What motive compels a man or woman to kill their child, or each other? How do you stop a mad man? How do you train people to find the rogue among them? What clear lanes of action do you make sure is provided them, to keep a person bent on violence from acting it out? I write too much. Sorry. I join you in expressing sorrow to these soldier's families.

    Thank you Paul...

Yes it was just such a senseless action to take.  I do wonder what, if anything could prevent something like this from happening again.  More stories are coming in and...it still doesn't explain everything.

I really feel for the families of the victims.

    Thank you for your comment.

I just heard a little while ago that the shooter is actually still alive and also that he had recently been given a poor performance rating.  Maybe that was his "last straw."  I remember my psychiatrist telling me that their profession has the highest suicide rate of any other, which I guess I can understand if they aren't taking care of themselves.  My son's psychiatrist killed herself a few years ago.  This guy evidently turned his rage outward.  The consequences of this war just keep getting sadder.

    Hey Judy

Wow...I really had not know those statistics.  I am so sorry about your son's psychiatrist.  I wonder what happens.  It shows a need for people in the helping profession to get help for themselves as well.

    Thank you for your insights...

I haven't watched the news for the past couple of days so I hadn't heard. God what a nightmare. You always imagine a psychiatrist to be the strong one, but their only human too. God knows what must have been going through his mind to do that. I feel so so sorry for the families, they must be going through hell.

Dear MM, firstly, apologies for my absence from Site. As u know, am in withdrawals and barely getting from Day to Day but getting there and Ps.God will be more online next week.   That was  a Dreadful occurence. It is not uncommon though . I have never felt psychiatrists/psycologists Therapists to be immune from Mental dis -order or insanity. On the contrary, many are drawn to the illnesses of the mind because of their own pain, hence the interest in same. I have met alot of 'sick' psychiatrists over the years. Many out of  touch with reality and living within a small arena of a psychiatric hospital and hiding behind a Desk with Dr. x on it. Many have seemed to me to have lost all feeling, to be uneccessarily cruel, egocentric and sexual abuse isnot as rare as we think in that field....   With regard the person in question, I agree with Judy about the Anger and Fear going outward.    Ive always believed we all have a breaking point, its a tiny line between not coping, illusion and insanity.   Ive never felt that profs in the Mental health Arena are immune. Its very sad and may God help all those relatives, wives, children mourning.    The mind is strong and yet weak.

I think people who suffer and speak about their suffering [as in this helpsite] have a safety valve,an outlet, arent wearing the armour of 'youre ill, im well' . the prospect of Iraq isnot a great one. The song Waltzing Matilda says it all.

May those soldiers Rest in Peace.

    Hello Rose!

Oh it is so good to see you.  I was worried about you.  I know that the withdrawals must be very difficult to deal with...actually I have no clue as I have never been through them myself.  Maybe when it is all done and over with you can write about your experience if you are up for it?

Yes this was such a terrible thing to happen...just unimaginable really...but yet these things do happen.  It makes one feel a bit powerless in the world...like anything can happen.  What solace is there for the families...I don't know.

Thanks so much for stopping by Rose.  Always love hearing from you.  Sorry you are not feeling well but I am hoping you feel better soon.

Hi Merely Me and all,  MM its amazing, it wasnt covered on any of the Irish stations and as u know, we've such a strong bond with the U.S.  It wasnt covered on the British or EC News either coz I checked... I think that life has become so cheap now that these things dont make headline news anymore.

These men/Soldiers hadnt time to say their prayers or say goodbye to loved ones, its a dreadful way to go. In battle the Spirit is aware it could happen but in the HQ where these  men were... When that Schoolkid shot the other kids on that Monday, it was all over the papers here and T.V. and BobGelfof here of the Boomtown Rats [a well known rock group] wrote a song about it 'tell me Why I dont like mondays, I want to shoot the whole world down.  He had been v upset by it.  MM I will write about the withdrawals  and I hope to let people know it can be done.  Love to all and thks again for your concern

    Hey Fifi!

Yeah...sometimes watching the news can be hard...so many bad things happening in the world.  I don't have any answers either.  I just really feel for those families right now.

It is good to hear from you!
