A Piece of the Puzzle

By Judy Friday, November 25, 2011

For the last couple of months, I've been having a harder time than usual with depression, while trying to decrease my antidepressants on the road to getting off of them because I've been on them so long, I've started to wonder if they're part of the problem.

The other day, I saw my chiropractor and was telling her about feeling so crummy and she asked me if I was taking Vitamin D3.  Yes, I have been for a long time.  I've been taking just over 1,000 mg. a day.  She told me I should be taking 5,000 mg. a day during the winter, so I went home and took some and, weirdly enough, that awful, oppressing heaviness started lifting that same day!  I thought perhaps it was placebo effect, but three days later, I'm still feeling better than I had been for some time.  So, I'm wondering if anyone else has had this experience.  I'm normally skeptical about things working so quickly, but maybe this is one of the factors in my depression.  I'm not sure I have all-out SAD, because I can get depressed any time of the year, but maybe the lack of Vitamin D from too little sunlight plays a bigger part than I thought.

Time will tell, I guess.  I'm not expecting that it's the cure-all, but anything that helps even a little is a good thing.

I have had exacty the same experience.  I am now very concious of taking my D vitamins as well as my B-complex.  I think they help.  To good health, vitamins, eating right and taking care of ourselves.  Every little bit helps.  Take care of you!  :)

I've often wondered about vitamin d supplements.  I have taken them in the past in relation to anemia from menstrual cycles/PMS.  I do hear that an increase in calcium and vit d from dairy can help calm PMS so why not depression.  I do get a fair amount of sun being I live in South Louisiana and tend to go outside everyday, I do notice I don't eat nearly as much dairy as I did when I was younger.  I used to have milk, cheese, yogurt every single day.  Now, i throw out a half gallon of milk every week it seems.  I will ask my doc about it.

Hi Judy maybe that's my problem a little. I was on D3 400mg a day and 5000 once a week. I have been out of them for several weeks now. I just got out of the hospital and wasn't getting them there. I am feeling depressed in the mornings and maybe that's why I will go out tomorrow and get some. Also my Dr is talking about putting me on  Viibryd and Geodone if my depression doesn't get better. Have you or anyone ever heard of this new antidepressantz?

That is something Judy

Some time ago I was prescribed mega doses of Vitamin D and I was a bit afraid of side effects.  Are you experiencing any from your vitamin D dosage?

I may get my levels checked soon at my next physical and if they prescribe the vitamin D...I may take it this time.

How are you doing now?  Let us know what happens with this...this is an exciting discovery.

Hi, Merely Me.  I haven't noticed any side effects from the addition of so much Vitamin D and I have to say, it hasn't spared me from all my symptoms, but I mostly noticed feeling more energy.  It had become a big deal to do the simplest chores and now it doesn't seem so overwhelming.  Go for it!
