Is there anyone out there suffering from treatment resistant depression who has any good advice, or has found good treatments which have helped please??
I had a LOT of trouble finding a treatment that worked, whether medication, therapy, or ECT. For a long time, about 9 years from the time I sought treatment from lifelong depression, nothing worked. I tried old antidepressants like Tofranil and trazodone, I tried new ones like Lexapro, Prozac, Paxil, Effexor. I tried mood stabilizers like carbamazapine and lithium and eskalith and Depakote, none of which worked. I also tried 19 ECT treatments. They help many people but caused a kind of living hell for me. I tried 3 therapists who used varying techniques. I attempted suicide 3 times. My first 2 psychiatrist (whom I saw for a total of 2.5 yrs) both told my parents to put me in a long term care facility and get on with their lives. I was unable to hold down a job. I was living with my parents. I got divorced. My house was foreclosed on.
Yes, I also had schizophrenia, but I feel depression was something separate. I had been depressed most of my life.
Finally, several years ago, my third psychiatrist put me on Wellbutrin. I was also taking Zyprexa as an antipsychotic, plus Trazodone, and a few meds for other health conditions. I think the Wellbutrin was what began turning me around, but it took a while to start working. After taking it for a few years, I began to experience depression again, and Zoloft and Deplin were added, and the depression went away. Right now, I have gotten off of the Deplin (a derivitave of Folate and prescribed as a "medical food") because it cost more than I could afford, and I am doing well without it.
I think the key is to keep trying till you find the right med or combination of meds. And it may take some time and a psychiatrist who is willing to work with you. I am living proof that there is hope! Now I feel better than I ever have in my whole life. I am starting to work a few hours a week part time and do some volunteer work. I have friends to talk to, which I never had before. I have added exercise and healthy eating to my program, and that helps keep me feeling well physically and mentally. Just keep trying and you will find what works best for you.
Report back and let us know about your progress, please.
Hey there
I can tell you that there are many people who come to My Depression Connection who have been told that they have treatment resistant depression. I am going to give you some resources we have on the site about this topic:
* Ask the Doctor: Treatment Resistant Depression
* Here is a post by another member who feels that they are treatment resistant and there are comments which may be helpful to you.
* Here is an article about Vagus Nerve Stimulation.
Some of the options to try can include: ECT, Vagus Nerve Stimulation, Using a combination of antidepressants, adding Deplin to your antidepressant, adding Abilify to your antidepressant, light therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, using supplements, changing your diet, exercise, and I am sure there are more things I am not remembering right now.
Tell us what you have tried so far and maybe we can brainstorm about more options.
Thank you for your question!
