Took the First Step!

By CC Friday, February 04, 2011

So I have been back at UT for a couple weeks now...

My semester feels pretty crazy- a lot of tests, homework, etc

My relationships feel a little crazy right now too

The return to campus has been a confused mixture of excitement, anxiety, and loneliness.Mostly anxiety.

But....... :] 3 good things have happened

1) I finally called the student health center to make a psychiatric appointment.

The case handler is ill and the psychiatrist was out of town or something but I am supposed to get a call on Monday!

2) I told my older sister about the return of my depression and she was wonderful in response :] She surprised me that very day with hot chocolate and a croissant in the library and told me I could spend the night at her house off campus if I wanted to...any time! What a wonderful sister.

3) It snowed last night and we got off from school today!

I am trying to focus on these 3 pretty good things in the midst of many stressors and distractors. I am even thinking about making myself a bracelet that says something positive that I can look at and focus on everyday. Or maybe everyday finding 2 or 3 good things to focus on everyday like writing a list everyday to make myself happier.... Who knows..maybe it will work!

I also am trying to look at different UT clubs I can join to meet new people.

I am determined to make today a good day.

Hi, CC.  I'm so glad you've had some good things happen lately, especially after taking a risk to talk to your sister.  We can get so mired in depression that we think nobody cares and then we get pleasantly surprised when it turns out that someone does!  I'm glad you have that appointment coming up and I'm sure that helps lighten the load a little, too.

Thanks for sharing your good news and hope you'll let us know how you're doing down the road, too.  It can be encouraging for others who are going through a tough time and think nothing good will ever happen to them.  But, as you've shown, it's not always about something good "happening," but the result of some efforts we make and risks we take.  Good for you!
