Depression

By butterflies627 Friday, June 29, 2007

I have been being treated for depression, agoraphobia, panic attacks, and ocd for 6 years. I don't feel like I am getting any better. How can I choose a therapist that can help me get better? I want to get my old life back. I used to do just about everything. Now, I stay in the house just about all the time. It is hard just to stand on my own front porch unless someone is with me.

Thank for the help,

Sandy Morgan

I came to this site because my partner is depressed and I don't know how to help him. I found something a year ago that really helped me but my partner is not (at all) interested in it and I can't force him, ofcouse. Maybe it's something for you? It's an inquiry process that you can do by yourself and there is ALWAYS someone available to help you when you need it. I'm speaking of The Work of Byron Katie. Have you heard the name? Go to http://www.thework.com for all the info and assistance you need to get started.
Also, her blog is VERY helpful - http://www.byronkatie.com. Years ago Byron Katie suffered from the very same things which you listed above and today she has become one of our greatest teachers! "My failure is my success, and my success is my success. How wonderful to be God’s will."

Penny,

Thank you I will go to her website. I didn't see your post till today. I am going through a hard time right now. My husband whom I have depended on through all this is leaving me. So, I won't have transportation or anyone to talk to or help pay the bills. I thought about a roommate cause I have a 3 bedroom trailer. But, the 2 bedrooms are really small. What do you think?

thanks,

Sandy

Dear Sandy,

It is always important to ask around to get a referral, so that you do not feel like you are throwing darts at the phone book to find the best professionals for your needs. Do not know if you have asked your primary care physician, as their office may be able to direct you to someone they know and respect, etc. You can also find out who others in your community feel confident in referring through attending local support groups. Personal referrals usually work out best, but this is not always possible.

I have listed out a few organizations that may support you in your search for a therapist or psychiatrist that specializes in your areas of need.

First, there is the National Association of Social Workers (www.socialworkers.org). On the top of their web page they have an icon "Find a social worker". From here, you may locate certified therapists in your area that focus on certain illnesses. (They also list out what insurances they take, sliding scales or not, etc.)

On the American Psychiatric Association website (www.psych.org) under "Public Information" on the left side tool bar, they have a search tool for psychiatrists by specialty and area.

There are also organizations like NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness www.nami.org) that have referral phone lines to support organizations in your area. Same goes for Mental Health America (www.nmha.org ) with affiliate offices throughout the country for support and information.

I hope this may info may be of aid. As you search and discover, if you would be willing to share with the community what you find works best, that would be a great support to others who are trying to do the same as you.

Best,
