how can I get motivated?

red Community Member January 01, 2008
  • Why is it that some days/weeks I can't even get the house cleaned? My husband has been really great but I know he's tired of a cluttered/ dirty house. I can't ask him to help because he puts in a 12 hour day. How can I get myself going to do just normal housework?

There are days when I just want to lie in bed all day. I know that's not good. I try to go outside & work w/ the cattle but w/ it being cold/snowy it makes it bad. I know I need to see a doctor or professional but I just can't even get geared up to do that. Talking to people isn't a help because most poopoo me or want to change the subject. Any ideas or help?

Tina, I understand where you are coming from. Please never think you are alone. It sounds like the medicince you are on is not working. Are you telling your doctor how bad it is? I know that fore years I lied to mine rather than tell the truth. Please talk to someone before you do something you will regret. always remember there are those that love you &...

    Hi Red,

You certainly are not alone!  Go to Flylady.com and see if it is a good fit for you.  It is a total home organizing plan done in 15 minutes a day.  They divide your house into zones, different zone a week, different mission everyday Monday through Friday.  This is the best fit for the overwhelmed and depressed person.

    Onto...

Onto the need to get help.  You are going to need to get your complete physical done with a complete blood work up to find out how everything is physically.  For how you "feel", there is no one like a therapist.  You may not get the right one on the first shot, but it is definitely worth sticking with it.  You are right, friends and family don't usually want to hear it.  They don't know what to do and they don't have the tools to help you.  That is what therapists are there for, for you.

And the role of nutrition in the mood cannot be stressed enough.  Even if you are down in bed, make sure you are getting your fruits, veggies, whole grains, protein, and a good multi-vitamin.  If you don't have it, you may want to check out the book Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing by Phyllis and James Balch.

Housework is boring and repetitive, no bones about it.  Is there music that you liked when you were younger and haven't listened to for a long time?  Crank it up and see what happens.  I have never had a time that hasn't worked!  But not just for the housework, go take a ride to no where and pop in the music and let go.  And try flylady... it does all of the work for you.

Another thing that helps me is that my husband and I have date night every week.  And it seems that it has grown to 2 nights a week.  But anyway, just time together, away from the mess and the routine, can really help you and your husband feel better.

I think the hardest thing once depression grabs you is taking steps to get out of it.  Too tired, too overwhelmed, too paralyzed to move.  Sometimes I find that I won't take steps because I don't believe that I can feel better.  When the feeling of being sick and tired of being sick and tired gets strong, then I can start taking steps.

I am on medication, I got tired of fighting to just feel "ok".  I feel better (not great) and I can move forward.  I am also in therapy which I would not take the meds without.  Working through my issues requires me to be on medication while I am doing it.  Not everyone needs to be on meds, but it is nice to take a little break from the overwhelming feelings of sadness and worthlessness while you get at the "why's"

I wish you the very best.

You need to get to see you doc and tell him/her whats going on. Write down all the things you are experiencing because its easy to forget when you get in there.

Sometimes I find it hard to motivate myself and lets face it, housework is the most boring repetitive thing...most people get sick of it. I make a list for the week and do one thing a day. Its surprising once you do one thing you seem motivated to do the next. For example I cleaned up the bathroom cupboards and then found the energy to do the rest of the bathroom. Next day linen press.... Write down your plan. One thing at a time. Its easy to be overwhelmed when you think of doing it all at one time. Best wishes

Thanks! That sound pretty much like how I'm doing it. I took down all the Christmas decorations & they made it as far as the dining room table. I am famous for just dusting or doing the tub & then maybe getting to vaccuming or the rest of the bathroom a couple of days later.
