Aside from medication, the most common treatment for people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is psychotherapy ("talk" therapy). "Talk" therapy is used to treat mental illness by talking with a professional. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) appears to be the most effective type of counseling for PTSD. CBT aims to help patients understand and change how they think about their trauma as well as the aftermath.
