Q: been taking Elavil 25 mg. for over three years - can I just stop it - or do I have to taper

I have been having dreams - very active dreams - although retired - am still dreaming about work - deadlines, etc.  I want to get off the Elavil - but don't know if I should taper or just stop!

The correct answer is to check with your doctor before trying to stop or taper from an antidepressant, even an old one. That's the best advice.

I've taken Elavil, Amitriptyline, for a long time at the same dose as you and have stopped and started it a number of times on my own through the years. I notice my sleep deteriorate though, waking up a lot of times, which is the reason I started it.

I have seen some people say it was worse for them and there is the reason to have your doctor advise about this. We are all affected differently by these drugs.
