Q: Suicidally depressed with alcoholism

Hello,

My 29 year old son is very sick. He has suffered with minor depression for about 12 years, but as of a year ago, the depression has led him to alcoholism. He was working at the same job, with health benefits for over 10 years, but in September 2009, he lost that job.

I have taken him to our family physician and he was admitted to a detox 2 times in October, 2009. He is not able to stay sober for even a day, not even an afternoon.

Upon admission to the detox the first time, the doctors told me that he has liver damage and blood pressure problems to the extent that they thought he was going to seize. After detox was completed, the facililty would not keep him in a program, they suggested out patient treatment. My son was not able to stay sober long enough to follow through with out patient. He is in such pain, he cannont cope.

In early November, he went to live with his older brother, 4 hours away, for a change of venue. Now, I am finding out that he is drinking again and confined to his room at my oldest son's home.

I am beside myself.

My son is going to die.

He no longer has insurance benefits and I need to find a way to get him help. He wants help, but doesn't know how to get it.

I don't know where to begin. I believe he needs to be sent away, for inpatient care to first treat his depression.

Please help. I am desperate.

Hi, Kate.  I am so sorry that your son is having to go through this and you're having to watch it happen.  I have two sons a little older than yours and have been through some tough times with them, so I know how heart-wrenching it is.

Your son could probably find some help through your county's mental health department, but I'm also giving you this link to a sharepost written by Merely Me on how to get mental health care when you don't have insurance or the money.  I sincerely hope your son can get the right care so that he can stay sober and save his life.  Please write here any time and let us know how things are going.  I will keep you in my prayers.
