Q: BiPolar Mom to Homeshool Highschooler - Need Help

I suffer from BiPolar Disorder and Adult ADHD and like many of my compatriots I am disorganized, often confused, easily frustrated and I am forgetful.  I read and study, but I don't retain more that 50% or so of the information.  Now I have to prepare lesson plans for my 9th grader to get him through the school year and caught up over the summer for next year.  I'm lost!  After working on it for three days, I think I have enough information for one or two days of classes, but the info is not in a usable format at this point.

If you are in a similar situation and have any advice or tips, I would certainly appreciate it.  I have no choice but to home school my child, so I have to succeed.

Oh, one other thing.  I have very little money, so I can't afford to buy a curriculum for him.  I have to find what I need in other ways.  I could sure use some help with that too.  Thank you!

Hi Tracey!

You are in luck as I homeschool my child and I too suffer from a mood disorder.  So are you going to continue to homeschool your child past the ninth grade?  Is this your first time homeschooling?  There are different laws for each state so you need to start with knowing the requirements.

Here is a good site to get you started where you can find the requirements for your state as well as some ideas about creating your own curriculum.

Does your child have special needs?  That is a whole other issue that I can obtain information should you need it.

Here is an article about how to create your own curriculum.

There are lots of free materials to be had for homeschoolers, and a lot resources are right on-line including worksheets and such.

The other suggestion I have is that you join an on-line homeschool group.  There you may be able to barter or trade materials with other homeschoolers.  Just do a search under yahoo groups for homeschool groups in your area.  This is essential for you to get the support you will need.

As far as organization goes, download and print a planner.  This absolutely essential for you to stay organized.  Here is a site which offers free printable planners.

You want to have a mixture of independent work and times when you actively teach.  On your bad days...have things lined up so that your child can work more independently.  There are also a lot of different ways a child can learn.  You can do more hands on projects and do more in depth study of a particular topic than your child may be able to do in school.

If you are concerned about what to teach...look up your child's public school and they will have a curriculum posted on-line to get ideas and guidelines of what to teach.

This is a topic I can go on and on about so I better quit while I am ahead.

But as far as your attention span...it might be good to just take periodic breaks...plan one lesson...write it all down...use visuals if you have to and take a break and let things sink in and begin again.

Do you have any supports who can help you?

I want to give you our Bipolar site link which you may find here.

Also here is our ADHD site as well.

You can do this!  I wish you the best of luck and please let me know if you need any other help or suggestions.
